Cutting Sugar Part One Posted by on Dec 1, 2021 in Advice, Arabic Language, Vocabulary

In this post, I thought we’d talk about “sugar” السُّكَر, types of sugar أنواع السكر, and why we’ve been told it is healthy to quit “added sugar” السكر المضاف. I personally have been trying to cut sugar قطع السكر for the past few months. I was sugar free for a month, but then I visited family in Jordan الأردن and you can imagine what happened when I saw desserts حلويات I missed such as kunafa I forgot all about my previous efforts to cut sugar. Now I’m back home and trying to start all over again. (We’ll see how long I last). 🤷‍♀️😁

Have you ever thought of cutting down sugar or cutting sugar completely from your diet?

Say no to sugar Image provided by Yasmine K.

Here is an interview with a nutritionist اخصائي تغذية talking about:

types of sugar

how added sugar is harmful to our health

the benefits of cutting added sugar

I usually transcribe and translate the clip, but I thought in this post, we could summarize the main points of the interview instead, get familiar with the main vocabulary words, then watch the interview. We can then answer some comprehension questions.

Note: Notice how at the beginning of the clip the interviewer first gives an introduction to the subject in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) اللغة العربية الفصحى then switches to Levantine dialect اللهجة الشامية when she begins speaking to the guest الضيفة and welcoming her ترحب بها. Throughout the interview, you will hear both MSA and dialect.

🍪(The following points summarize the clip from the beginning to (3:09))

Benefits of stopping sugar

  • The amount of sugar production in the world in 2018 was about 186 million tons.
  • This indicates that people have difficulty reducing or eliminating sugar.
  • There should at least be awareness of the need to reduce sugar consumption after the increase in the number of people around the world with diabetes.
  • What are the benefits of stopping sugar, and what are its alternatives?
  • What are the types of sugar, and are they harmful or are there benefits?
  • Sugar has many forms and types because there are organs in the human body that need to absorb sugar, such as red blood cells and the brain.
  • Two types of sugar:
  • Added sugar which is refined white sugar
  • Natural sugar found in fruits, vegetables, milk and nuts

📝Comprehension questions:

When the news anchor said “Good morning” to the guest, what was her response and why?

What is the name of the guest or nutritionist?

What does this large amount of sugar produced by the world indicate?

What is the name of the disease that results from the consumption of sugar in large quantities?

What are the types of sugar?

I hope you give تخفيف السكر a try or if you’re strong قطع السكر 😁. Stay tuned for the continuation of the interview next week. Till then, happy Arabic learning! 😊
