Arabic Prepositions (حروف الجر) are an interesting and a challenging topic for learners of Arabic. When I mark students’ essays, I notice many mistakes with prepositions. In this post, I highlight the meanings and usage of two of the Arabic prepositions; give examples and some exercises on the selected prepositions.

 

 

على   means on/over, e.g.

وضعت الكتاب على الطاولة.

I put the book on the table.

حملت الحقيبة على ظهري.

I carried the bag on my back.

حملوا العريس على الأكتاف.

They lifted the groom on their shoulders.

 حتى has the meaning of until or up to:

سأشاهد الفيلم حتى آخره.

I will watch the film up to its end.

صاحبته حتى نهاية الرحلة.

I accompanied him until the end of journey.

سهرنا حتى الصباح.

We stayed up until the morning.

Complete the sentences below with the appropriate preposition (حتى – على)

هناك كتب كثيرة ———– الرف.

استمر الحفل ——- الصباح.

هبطت الطائرة ————- المدرج.

سيظلون أصدقاء ———- آخر العمر.

جلست البنت ———–  الكرسي.

Answers:

هناك كتب كثيرة على الرف.

There are many books on the shelf.

استمر الحفل حتى الصباح.

The party lasted till the morning.

هبطت الطائرة على المدرج.

The plane landed on the runway.

سيظلون أصدقاء حتى آخر العمر.

They will remain friends till the end of their lives.

جلست البنت على الكرسي.

The girl sat on the chair.
