If you want to buy food in an Arab country using the Arabic language, you need to use one of the colloquial dialects because it would be very odd to use Modern Standard Arabic in this context, since it is too formal and sellers may not even be able to understand.  In this posting, I present some Egyptian colloquial expressions that can be used for requests, and especially to buy food. There are a lot of supermarkets, yet most locals buy their food especially fruits and vegetables from the market (السوق).

Following are some Egyptian Arabic expressions that can be used to request of buy food, and a list of vocabulary items related to food:

لو سمحت/ من فضلك

Do you have?

عندك

عايز/عايزة

Give me

اديني

Can I have?

ممكن آخد

How much?

بكم

Here you are!

اتفضل/اتفضلي  

كيلو طماطم لو سمحت!

“One kilo of tomatoes, please!”

 

عندك طماطم

“Do you have tomatoes?”

 

عايز كيلو طماطم

“I want one kilo of tomatoes!”

 

اديني  كيلو طماطم

“Give me one kilo of tomatoes!”

 

ممكن آخد كيلو طماطم   

“Can I have one kilo of tomatoes?”

 

بكم كيلو الطماطم

“How much is one kilo of tomatoes?”

 

اتفضل   الحساب.

“Here is the money!”
