Everyday Arabic phrases, using a kids’ song (1) Posted by on Sep 6, 2017 in Arabic Language, Language, Literature, Pronunciation, Vocabulary

Today, we’re going to learn some everyday phrases in Arabic. To do that, we’re going to use a kids’ song called: ‘Mom, answer me!’ ماما ردي علي

islamic heritage

The song (video below) is in Standard Arabic and it is about a kid called Moodo مودو  . Moodo is a bit bored and is looking for something to do or someone to play with him. He ends up calling every single member of his family and asking them to pay attention to him.

In this part, we’re going to learn the phrases and what they actually mean in English. Because it’s a long one, this will be done in two blog posts, this one and the next one. In the third and the fourth parts of this post, we’re going to learn how to say the same phrases mentioned here, but in Egyptian and Levant (Lebanese) colloquial Arabic.

Ok, lets start

حسناً لنبدأ

أَنَا مُودُو الصَّغِيرْ

I’m little Moodo

لَا أَحَدْ يَهْتَمْ بِي اليَوْمْ

Nobody cares about me today

لَا أَدْرِي لِمَاذَا

I don’t know why!

=============

مَامَا رُدِّي عَـلَيّ

Mom, answer me

بَابَا رُدَ عَـلَيّ

Dad, answer me

مُودِي رُدِّي عَـلَيّ

Moody, answer me

مَامَا رُدِّي

 بَابَا وَ جَدِّي

Dad, and grandpa

 مُوتَة رُدِّي

Moota, answer me

مُودِي رُدِّي

Moody, answer me

رُدِّي ي ي ي ي ي

Answer meeeeeee

=============

أَرْجُوكُمْ رُدُّواعَلَيّ

Please answer me

=============

Mom, come on, feed me

إِنِّي جَائِعْ غَذِّينِي

I’m hungry, give me my lunch

=============

إِنِّي مَشْغُولَة

I’m busy

أَطْبُخُ الفُولَ

I’m cooking the beans

إِنِّهَا مَشْغُولَة

She’s busy

تَطْبُخُ الفُولَ

She’s cooking the beans

=============

انْتَظِرْنِي نِصْفَ سَاعَة

Wait for me, for half an hour

بَعْدَهَا سَنَأْكُلُ جَمَاعَة

And after that, we’ll all eat together

=============

لَا لَا لَا تَدْخُلْ إِلَى المَطْبَخْ

No no don’t go into the kitchen

لِأَنَّ الأَرْضَ مَبْلُولَة

Because the floor is wet

=============

اِذْهَبْ يَا مُودُو

Go, Moodo

=============

بَابَا أَتَقْرَأْ لِي قِصَّة قَبْلَ الغَدَاءْ؟

Dad, would you read a story for me, before lunch?

كَيْ أَنْسَى جُوعِي

So that I forget about my hunger

كَيْ أَنْسَى العَنَاءْ

and so that I forget about the tiredness

=============

إنِي أَسْتَمِعُ إِلَى الأَخْبَارْ

I’m listening to the news

فِي هَذَا الوَقْتِ مِنَ النَّهَارْ

in this time of the day

أَرْجُو أَنْ تخْفِضْ صَوْتَكْ

Please lower your voice

فَأِنِّي أَشْعُرُ بِالدُّوَار

I feel dizzy
