In a previous post, I wrote an introduction to the art of Arabic graffiti. In this post, I write about the relationship between graffiti and the Egyptian revolution.

Due to the social and political nature of graffiti, it played a very important role in the revolution by representing the aspirations of the people and the longing for freedom and resistance. In response, the authorities painted the walls to remove the graffiti.

As sad as this was, the artists always responded by humorous expressions, like: “Thank you for cleaning the walls so that we can draw more!”, and sometimes they drew more or wrote what was drawn under the painting.
All the images are taking from a Facebook page that aims to document the Egyptian revolution graffiti (حملة وثق جرافيتي الثورة المصرية).
