Today, I have a fun video clip for you that you can listen to if you would like to improve your listening in Lebanese Arabic. The video is based on a short dialogue between a mother and her 4-year-old daughter that’s taking place during home quarantine period فترة الحجر المنزلي. In the first part of the post, I’m going to provide you with a script of the dialogue both in Arabic and English. In the second part of this blog post, we’re going to learn the equivalent of the dialogue in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and study some phrases in detail.

The short video clip [see below] is only about 50-second-long and it’s a video post that was published on the Instagram account of Nour Arida – a Lebanese model عارضة أزياء لبنانية. The videos Nour posts of herself and her daughter – Ayla – has got a large number of viewings عدد كبير من المشاهدات and is getting a lot of attention الكثير من الاهتمام on Instagram. The main reason is probably the funny المضحكة and cute way الطريقة اللطيفة  Ayla speaks and respond to her mother’s questions. In some videos, the father – George – sometimes intervenes يتدخل  or laughs in the background, as is the case in this video.

The video is included as part of quarantine life events/activities as many people all over the world are posting photos and videos of what they are doing while trapped at home عالقين في المنزل . The hashtag Arabs started regarding this is:

#فعاليات_الحجر_المنزلي 

Or “quarantine/staying at home events”

جورج: مبلي

نور: قال امبلي

      ليه عم بتفنّصي؟

Nour: Have you told your dad that I have Corona?

 

أيلا: لا

Ayla: No!

 

نور: لا؟

Nour: No?!

 

جورج: مبلي

George: yes (she did)

 

نور: قال امبلي

      ليه عم بتفنّصي؟

Nour: He said “yes”

           Why are you lying?

 

أيلا: أنا قالت (قلت) بلكي نور عندا كورونا – بلكي

Ayla: I said, maybe Nour has Corona – maybe!

 

نور: آه

Nour: Oh

 

أيلا: مش أكيد

Ayla: not for sure

 

نور: آه، هيك قلتيلو؟

Nour: Oh so this is what you told him?

 

أيلا: إيه

Ayla: Yes!

 

نور: وإنت شو يعني حكيم؟ كيف؟ ليه قرّرتي إنو معي كورونا؟

      ما فهمت

Nour: And you’re what, I mean a doctor? How? Why have you decided that I have Corona?

I didn’t understand

 

أيلا: أنا مش حكيم

Ayla: I’m not a doctor

 

نور: إيه؟ إيه كيف عرفتي لكان؟

Nour:

 

أيلا: سمعتك عالحمام (بالحمام) عم تأطسي

Ayla: I heard you in the bathroom, sneezing

 

نور: عم شو؟

Nour: Doing what?

 

أيلا: أطّسي

Ayla: Sneezing

 

نور: أطّسي؟

Nour: Sneezing?

 

أيلا: أتشوم

Ayla: Atshoum [the sound of a sneeze]

 

نور: بعرف شو يعني عطّسي، بعرف

      إيه وشو خصّ؟

Nour: I know what “Aats-i” means. I know

Yeah? And what does this have to do with it?

 

أيلا: رحت عند جورج

Ayla: I went to George

 

نور: إيه؟

Nour: Yeah?

 

أيلا: وجورج قال إنو إنت عندك كورونا

Ayla: And George said that you have Corona!

 

نور: هييييييي! ولو أيلا! ولو جوروج

       هيك بتقرري؟

Nour: Woooah! Come on Ayla! Come on George!

أيلا: جورج قال إنو ما تدقريني

Ayla: George said that you (shouldn’t/ don’t) touch me

 

نور: بس أنا ما عم بدقرك

Nour: But I’m not touching you
