Punctuation marks Posted by on Sep 27, 2011 in Arabic Language, Grammar

After getting a question about punctuation marks (علامات الترقيم), I write about the topic again. There are a lot of similarities between the use of punctuation marks in Arabic and in English.

Full stop (النقطة) .

We use the full stop at the end of complete sentences, e.g.

علامات الترقيم مهمة جدا في فهم النص المكتوب .

Punctuation marks are very important for understanding written texts.

Question mark (علامة الاستفهام) ؟

We use question marks at the end of a question, e.g.

لماذا نحتاج علامات الترقيم؟

Why do we need punctuation marks?

Exclamation mark (علامة التعجب) !

We use exclamation marks at the end of exclamatory sentences, e.g.

ما أجمل اللوحة !

What a beautiful painting!

Deletion mark (علامة الحذف) …

This is made up of three dots. We use it when we quote an incomplete statement, and when we give an incomplete list, e.g.

من أمثلة علامات الترقيم النقطة، علامة الاستفهام، علامة التعجب …

Examples of punctuation marks include full stop, question mark, exclamation mark …
