The other day, I met with the head of a 基金会 (fund) in Shenzhen. He compared the process of institutional investing to a 选美 (beauty contest) rather than a more focused and individualized process such as 选偶 (selecting a spouse). He iterated time and again that one must have basic standards as the groundwork for 筛选 (filtering) rather than trying to digest all the information available on all stocks like how Warren Buffett used to read about all of the securities listed in the Moody’s manual. Using a mixture of 量化 (quantitative) and 质量化 (qualitative) measures as the groundwork, an investor must narrow down thousands of stocks to hundreds and begin more detailed research from there. When an associate of mine mentioned that even being able to 端咖啡 (deliver coffee) so as to be able to first 靠近 (be near) the industry and later 深入 (enter more deeply). The fund manager advised my friend to first 累积经验 (accumulate experience), as getting into the industry without some level of experience was 不大可能 (not highly likely).
