Can you believe another decade is almost behind us?! I know I sure can’t. It’s always fun looking back at the end of a decade. I love music and I love end of the year countdowns, so I’m combining both in this post! Music is a great tool for studying not only the language, but also the culture of a country. Cai Xukun (蔡徐坤 – cài xú kūn)
No Exception（没有意外 – méi yǒu yì wài)

Cai Xukun is only 21, but he’s already a megastar. He’s an actor, singer, dancer, rapper, and songwriter from Hunan. He was on the reality shows Super Idol and Idol Producer before becoming a part of the boy band Nine Percent (百分九少年). The band didn’t last long, and he soon launched a solo career. Interestingly enough, many of his singles have been in English. This song was his highly-anticipated first Chinese single and it has been a huge hit.

Light Years Away (光年之外 – guāng nián zhī wài)

Her real name is Gloria Tang Sze-wing, but most people know her by her stage name, which stands for “Get Everybody Moving.” This singer-songwriter and actress was born in Shanghai and exploded onto the Hong Kong music scene in 2008. She won 2nd place in the 2014 edition of China’s hit show I Am a Singer. Two years later, she became the only Asian artists to be featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Her hit song “Light Years Away” passed the 200 million view mark on YouTube a few months ago.

The multi-talented musician, singer, songwriter, and actor from Taiwan has had tremendous success over the span of his 20-year career. When I look back on the five years I spent in China in this decade, one song definitely stands out – “Xiao Pingguo.” This song by the Chopstick Brothers is an earworm if there ever was one, as you just can’t get it out of your head! Originally released as a promotional song for the film “Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon” (老男孩之猛龙过江 – lǎo nán hái zhī měng lóng guò jiāng), the song took off thanks to its catchy lyrics, fun dance moves, and absolutely ridiculous MV (what they call music videos in China).
