’80s Rap for the “Holiday” Season Posted by on Nov 5, 2011 in Culture

I know I’m on a roll with these nostalgic posts, helping you imagine Holland as it was in the ’80s and early ’90s, but, hey, autumn is the time to be thinking about the past.  Today I want to introduce you, or re-introduce you, as the case may be, to the 1987 hit “Holiday,” by MC Miker G and DeeJay Sven.  These two gangly Dutchies are great at:  dancing (box-step), rapping (over Madonna), and bringing “a little piece of Amsterdam” wherever they go.

As you may be able to guess, this was Miker and Sven’s only big hit, but it was a really big one.  It reached number one on the singles charts in 34 countries.  And the video is exactly the kind of thing that people go wild sending each other, now that we are in the age of the Viral Video.  But MC Miker G and DeeJay Sven couldn’t have foreseen that aspect of their appeal.  As with Dannyboy and Meneer Kaktus, one wonders…where are they now?!

as much as I know, DJ Sven works now as a radio deejay. as for MC Miker G, I found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKUIDrN_vmo (unfortunately I could hardly understand a word, but if anyone could make at least a rough translation… perhaps? :))
