Fashion and Prinsjesdag 2015 Posted by on Sep 30, 2015 in Culture, News

Earlier this month, King Willem-Alexander presented to the government and the Dutch people the changes for the coming year. Important topics such as health insurance costs, military expansions and the refugee crisis were all part of this very important speech.

However, Prinsjesdag isn’t only about the king’s speech. One very popular topic related to Prinsjesdag is the outfit choices of the women who attend the speech. For some women, their attire is merely a matter of personal taste, but for others, such as the member of the Tweede Kamer Marianne Thieme from the Partij voor de dieren, what they wear is about the political message they want to share.

The Minister van Onderwijs, Jet Bussemaker, arrived at this year’s Prinsjesdag with a very interesting outfit designed by the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. The outfit was created by a vast array of designers from different disciplines at the university using the latest technology. The shoes she wore were designed for the spring to adapt to the walking style of the wearer. The dress was designed especially for the minister’s body using different types of ink and designs. The hoedje, which was also designed and created by the same team, was very different and finished the outfit very well. Although there were challenges for the designers, the team at TU Eindhoven was able to create a very unique outfit for the minister, an outfit that isn’t only innovative, but one that also represents the pragmatic philosophy of TU Eindhoven as well as many other Dutch institutions.

The following video explains the process of minister Bussemaker’s dress.

What do you think of the dress?

I am a writer, reader, language teacher, traveler, and a food lover! I now live in The Netherlands with my husband Riccardo, our cat Mona, and our dog Lisa, and the experience has been phenomenal. The Dutch culture is an exciting sometimes topsy-turvy world that I am happily exploring!

This was really interesting! I had noticed her in the other video and wondered about what she was wearing because it was so different from everyone else. It was also fun to listen to how Dutch was spoken by the various women working on the project.

@Melissa Melissa, I also wondered about her outfit before seeing the video, particularly about her hat. I’m glad you enjoyed the video 🙂
