One of my favourite childhood memories is sitting outside our house on the steps with a pile of rocks, a bottle of bubbles and a handful of leaves. I don’t remember quite how old I was but I do remember that I was on a mission and a very important one at that.
I was making rock sandwiches!
I had searched out the best rocks, ensuring one side was suitably flat. I had picked the freshest, greenest leaves and I had ensured that my bottle of bubbles had been shaken just the right amount. Here’s the recipe for my rock sandwiches:
Rock Sandwiches – serves 4 people
Ingredients:
- 8 rocks (not too big but not too small)
- bottle of bubble mixture
- 4 delicious looking green leaves
Steps:
1. Spread bubble mixture on one side of each of the eight rocks.
2. Place one leaf each on the bubble side of four rocks.
3. Cover each leaf with another rock, bubble side down.
4. Enjoy!
As kids we can get into a lot of trouble but we also have a lot of creativity. Mud pies are another favourite that children like to make.

Mud Pie Recipe – serves 6
1. Buy some good quality sand.
2. Go outside and dig up two cups of mud.
3. Remove any twigs and rocks you can easily see.
4. Put one cup of the sand in a large bowl and mix in one cup of dirt. Mix until both the sand and mud are well combined and all the clumps are broken.
5. Add in about one and a half cups of water.
6. Slowly add in the other cup of dirt, stirring well.
7. Place in a large pan and lay out in the sun to dry.
Did you ever “make” pretend food items when you were a kid? What was your favourite thing to make?
