A Charlie Brown Christmas Posted by on Dec 25, 2011 in Culture

Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate!

Today is Christmas Day.  Christmas is a Christian religious holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.  This holiday is observed by many American, as well as Christians around the world.  In the United States, Christmas is a national holiday which means all federal and state offices and many businesses are closed (i.e. post offices, banks, retail stores).  People often enjoy spending this holiday (and time off) with family and friends as well as attending religious services that take place in churches either on Christmas Eve* or Christmas Day.  Christmas celebrations in the United States generally include the opening of presents from under the Christmas tree, visiting with family, and a large feast**.

I imagine many of you already know about the holiday of Christmas, but I am going to share with you classic Christmas holiday video ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ that explains this holiday to you in English.

The movie ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ is a famous and often favorite holiday movie in the United States.  This video was a prime-time animated TV special that first showed on TV in 1965 and it has been aired*** every year since then!  In this video the Peanuts gang**** put on a Christmas play that Charlie Brown directs.  One of the major themes of the video is the over commercialization of Christmas***** which upsets Charlie Brown.   If you have never seen this video you might really enjoy it!  The English that is spoken in the video is not too fast paced and is generally clear and easy to understand.  Here is one of the more famous scenes from the movie.

* the night before Christmas

** big meal

**** group of friends

***** the making of Christmas more about presents and money, rather than about the religious holiday
