English Around the World – Hong Kong Posted by on Jul 30, 2013 in Culture, English Language

Hong Kong was a British colony for over 150 years, so it should come as no surprise that a lot people speak English there. Practice your English reading and listening with this video that takes you on a great day trip around Hong Kong. Visit Kowloon Park, eat dim sum, stroll on the Avenue of Stars, go shopping, watch the Symphony of Lights on Victoria Harbor, and take in the view from the Peak.

“Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and a former British colony. A great day in Hong Kong begins with a dim sum breakfast. From there, take a stroll through beautiful Kowloon Park. Inside the park, you’ll find a variety of animals, such as: flamingos, turtles, and geese. This is a peaceful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life. There’s even an art exhibit for you to check out. Before you go, try to make your way through the maze.

Hong Kong’s public transportation is great. You can take air conditioned double decker buses for a nice view of the streets passing by. Head down to Victoria Harbor to take in the skyline of Central. Walk along the Avenue of Stars, where you’ll see famous names like kung-fu stars Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Smile for the camera and snap some photos.

A ferry can take you from Kowloon over to Central for cheaper than the subway, and it’s much more scenic. On the other side, dig in to a big tasty bowl of curry noodles. Then, go do some shopping in some of Hong Kong’s cool stores.

In the evening, take a Star Ferry harbor cruise. Your ticket includes an open bar, so get yourself a few cocktails. Then kick back and enjoy the Symphony of Lights performance, the largest permanent light and sound show in the world as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

After the show, hop back on the bus and take it up to the Peak. Once at the top, you’ll get an incredible panoramic view of Central, Victoria Harbor, and Kowloon. Wind down your night back on the Kowloon side at one of the many restaurants. Choose from a variety of fresh seafood, grab a table, and dig in. There you have it – one awesome day in Hong Kong.”
