Not quite a household issue, but the same kind of linguistic issue… My first week in Spain, the zipper on my jacket broke, and I couldn’t tell anyone about it because in 6+ years of Spanish study, I had never once seen or heard the word for “zipper”.

I turned to my trusty pocket dictionary (yeah, this was pre-smartphone) and I think that was the first new word I learned during that year abroad.
