What’s up, guys? How have you been doing?

Last month we covered some idioms in English related to numbers. So how about we go to the second share of our lesson. It takes two to tango, so join me and let’s go!

to put two and two together – to join the pieces, to correctly guess something based on information, to have a realization

  • The police finally put two and two together and discovered who committed the crime
  • When I saw the two of them at the bar, I put two and two together and realized they were having an affair

that makes two of us – when you agree with something that the other person is saying

  • -I have no ideia what is going on -That makes two of us! 
  • -The month barely started and I’m already running out of money – Well, that makes two of us

to be on cloud nine – to be happy and in ecstasy when something good happens

  • I’ve been on cloud nine since I met that girl on the coffee shop
  • The couple was on cloud nine when the wife found out she was pregnant 

(to be the) third wheel – literally, to be an extra unnecessary presence, to get in the way of a couple when they are together

  • Don’t go with them to the restaurant, you are going to be the third wheel
  • Mark and Janet invited me to go on a trip to the beach with them, but I don’t want to be a third wheel 

one of a kind – when something is veyr unique and special

  • This wine was expensive, but it  was worth it because it is truly one-of-a-kind 
  • Spending spring in Venice is a one-of-a-kind experience, you should try it

one for the road – to order a last drink before you leave the bar

  • -The bar is closing -Can we at least have one for the road
  • Let’s just have one for the road before calling a cab
