À la une means « on the front page, » or at the head of the news stories. Ce soir, examinons ce qui est à la une en France- ou bien, ce qui est enterré dans les pages au milieu !
Je me suis rendue compte (I realized) que je n’ai pas lu de journal en français (that I haven’t read a French newspaper) depuis… très longtemps. Alors, corrigeons cette paresse : let’s correct that laziness, avec Le Monde !
Le Monde is a French daily newspaper (un journal quotidien) available online at www.lemonde.fr. Hichem did an excellent revue de presse summarizing les médias français, placing Le Monde at the center or center-right of the political spectrum. Quoi qu’il en soit, Le Monde reliably offers an insight into les évènements mondiaux (world events) as experienced by our Froggy friends.

…Ok, real talk : Mainstream news is kind of boring. Au lieu de lire ce qui est à la une, voici quelques histoires un peu uniques (instead of reading what’s on the front page, here are a few kind of unique stories) :
–Assassinat du patriarche du principal clan mafieux de Montréal :
Histoire : « L’homme considéré comme le patriarche du principal clan mafieux de Montréal, Nicolo Rizzuto, 86 ans, a été assassiné chez lui mercredi soir… »
« The man considered the patriarch of the principal mafia clan of Montreal, Nicolo Rizzuto, 86 years old, was assassinated at his home Wednesday night… »
Analyse: If we read this kind of article in French class, I’d pay more attention. Also, chère Bebeth (ma meilleure amie), il est maintenant interdit de démenager à Montréal.
—La junte birmane s’apprêterait à libérer Aung San Suu Kyi:
Histoire : The Burmese junta’s suppression of Aung San Suu Kyi, democratic activist and winner of a Nobel Prize for Peace, under house arrest may come to an end on Saturday.
Analyse: Good news for her, bad news for the journalists who have to pronounce her name again.
–A Londres, une manifestation d’étudiants dégénère
Histoire : Londoners come together to protest raising school fees to £6,000 (up to £9,000 in some cases).
Analyse : France is just jealous someone is manif’ing better than they are. But this has to represent some deeper current of discontent. À suivre (to follow).
