Drowning Deep Within “L’Encre de tes Yeux” Posted by on Jun 15, 2011 in Music, Vocabulary

His name may ring a familiar bell to you. In today’s post, Francis Cabrel, the by-now iconic French singer, borrows une plume to pen a few poignant words that may very well leave some of you, faithful fans of The French Blog, quasi-speechless…

Drawn from within l’encre des yeux (the ink of the eyes) of his beloved, his carefully-wrought lyrics reveal la profonde tristesse (the deep sadness) that confounds his soul, as he finally comes to realize a painful yet inescapable fact: He may never, ever, be with her again
Ah, ce bien pauvre Francis!

Francis Cabrel: “L’Encre de tes Yeux” (“The Ink of Your Eyes”)

A reggae version of “L’Encre de tes Yeux” by STRAIKA, who instead of murky swampy Venise (Venice), dreams of Africa

L’Encre de tes Yeux“, interpreted by Patrick Fiori

Puisqu’on ne vivra jamais tous les deux

Since we’ll never live both together

Puisqu’on est fous, puisqu’on est seuls

Since we’re crazy, since we’re alone

Puisqu’ils sont si nombreux

Since they’re so many

Même la morale parle pour eux

Even morals speak in their favor

J’aimerais quand même te dire

I still wish to tell you

Tout ce que j’ai pu écrire

All I could write

Je l’ai puisé à l’encre de tes yeux

I drew it from the ink of your eyes

Je n’avais pas vu que tu portais des chaînes

I didn’t see that you were carrying chains

À trop vouloir te regarder,

By wanting so much to look at you

J’en oubliais les miennes

I forgot mine

On rêvait de Venise et de liberté

We used to dream of Venice and freedom

J’aimerais quand même te dire

I still wish to tell you

Tout ce que j’ai pu écrire

All I could write

C’est ton sourire qui me l’a dicté

It’s your smile that dictated it to me

Tu viendras longtemps marcher dans mes rêves

You will for long come walking into my dreams

Tu viendras toujours du côté

You will always come from the side

Où le soleil se lève

Where the sun rises

Et si malgré ça j’arrive à t’oublier

And even if I could forget you

J’aimerais quand même te dire

I still wish to tell you

Tout ce que j’ai pu écrire

All I could write

Aura longtemps le parfum des regrets

Will for long wear the scent of regret
