La Chanson d’Astérix! (The Song of Asterix!) Posted by on Dec 4, 2010 in Culture, Music, Vocabulary

It’s finally the weekend, par Toutatis !And today’s DMCV is presented to you by Astérix le Gaulois, who will teach you a very special leçon d’histoire (History lesson.)

À vrai dire (to tell the truth), as “les férus de l’histoire(“the history buffs”) amongst youknow only too well, this lesson is not always historiquement juste(historically accurate)!

For example,as a Gaulois, Astérix would naturally speak one of les langues celtiques(Celtic languages), and would not speak French or call himself French (yet, by a comically deceiving anachronism, we find him in this song poking fun at a woman, Herma Vos, for “not even being French“!)

It may come as a surprise to some, perhaps even as a shocking “revelation” to others, to realize that the French language came later than Astérix’s time, through the invasion of the German Franks who occupied the land of the native Gaulois, ultimately renaming the conquered land after their own tribal name: “France“, or the “Land of the Franks“, thus giving rise to the first known ruling dynasty of France known as les Mérovingiens—This is a theme we’ve already mentioned en passant here in the French Blog, but all historical considerations aside, c’est une chanson très amusante (it’s a very amusing song), so enjoy mes amis !

LA CHANSON D’ASTÉRIX (by “LE GRAND ORCHESTRE DU SPLENDID”)

Cours d’histoire !

History lesson!

Oral exam on Gaul and the Gaulois!

Au temps lointain
Back in the old times
Où les Romains
When the Romans
Avaient envahi la Gaule
Invaded Gaul
Il ne resta qu’un seul village
There remained only one village
Qui ne connut pas l’esclavage
Which did not know slavery

C’est le village d’Astérix
It’s the village of Asterix
Et de son copain Obélix
And of his friend Obelix
Qui festoyaient toute la journée
Who feasted all day long
En mangeant du sanglier
By eating wild boar

But Asterix and Obelix never existed
It’s a comic book sold in the whole world!

What is he saying this nitwit?
Il faut le livrer à César
We’ve got to hand him to Cesar
Qui le traînera dans la boue
Who will drag him in the mud
Les pieds attachés à son char !
With his feet tied to his chariot!

Le vent souffle dans les bois
The wind blows in the woods
Regardez, les voilà !
Look, here they are!
Nos ancêtres les Gaulois
Our ancestors the Gaulois

Hé ! Youpi youpi

Youpi hourra

Buvons de la potion magique

Let’s drink some magic potion

Hé Youpi youpi et youpi hourra

Nous serons forts comme Astérix !
We’ll be strong like Asterix!

Ah !
Ah! You in the last raw, my little Maucourt Paul
Dernier en tout, même en gymnastique
The last in everything, even in the gym
Je vous écoute
I’m listening to you

“Astérix était plus fort que tous les plus gros malabars
“Asterix was stronger than all the husky guys
Than all the Goths and Osthrogoths, and even Conan the Barbarian”

Mademoiselle Prévost Alice, première en éducation sexuelle
Miss Prevost Alice, first in Sex Ed

Quand je dis ‘Astérix’, à quoi pensez-vous ?
When I say “Asterix”, what do you think of?
Attention, c’est un piège
Be careful, it’s a trap

“C’est une espèce de petite croix qui sert de renvoi dans la marge
It’s kind of a small cross which is applied to return to the margin
Used to explain in detail at the bottom of the page”

Nul, archi-nul !
Worthless, totally worthless! You shall be whipped naked in the arena by the Emperor’s guards! He he he he

Chic alors
Goody-goody

Le vent souffle dans les bois
The wind blows in the woods
Hé, regardez, les voilà
Hey, look, here they are
Nos ancêtres les Gaulois !
Our ancestors the Gaulois!

Hé Youpi youpi

Youpi hourra

Buvons de la potion magique

Let’s drink some magic potion

Youpi youpi

Youpi hourra

Nous serons forts comme Astérix !

We’ll be strong like Asterix!

Winogradoff Michel
Winogradoff Michel

First in nothing, other than slingshooting at the dining hall

Je vous écoute !

I’m listening to you!

Obelix, by a mere slap threw Romans in the air

Boum !
Who fell back twenty meters away, their heads pushed into the ground—Boum!

Ha ha, très marrant !
Ha ha, very funny!

Mademoiselle Herma Vos, même pas française !

In your own flat country, does a hero such as Asterix exist?

[Now go figure what she’s actually saying there!]

Mais qu’est-ce qu’elle raconte ? C’est lamentable !
What is she talking about? That’s pathetic!

Vous serez livrée à la tribu Belge
You shall be handed to the Belgian tribe

And bound on a beer barrel, you’ll be rolled in burning fries!!

Le vent souffle dans les bois
The wind blows in the woods

Attention, les voilà
Be careful, here they are

Nos ancêtres les Gaulois
Our ancestors the Gaulois

Et youpi youpi

Youpi hourra

Buvons de la potion magique
Let’s drink some magic potion

Youpi youpi

Youpi hourra

Nous serons forts comme Astérix !

We’ll be strong like Asterix!

Youpi youpi

Nous serons forts comme Astérix !
