Mon Amour, Mon Ami (My Love, My Friend) Posted by Hichem on Jan 6, 2013 in Music, Vocabulary
Victor Hugo has famously compared love to un arbre (a tree):
“Il a besoin de racines fortes pour croître et prospérer” (it needs strong roots to grow and prosper)
Marie Laforet is the first who sang “Mon amour, mon ami” (“My Love, my Friend”)
Today, Marie Laforet is better remembered in France as the lady who gave a warning live on TV about a vast conspiracy threatening the country stranger than “X-Files”!

A scene from the French movie “8 Femmes” (“8 Women”) featuring Marie Laforet’s “Mon amour, mon ami“
Toi mon amour, mon ami
You my love, my friend
When I dream, it’s about you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Quand je chante c’est pour toi
When I sing, it’s for you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Je ne peux vivre sans toi
I can’t live without you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Et je ne sais pas pourquoi
And I don’t know why
Je n’ai pas connu d’autres garçons que toi
I never knew any other boys than you
And if I did, I don’t remember them
À quoi bon chercher, faire des comparaisons?
Why bother searching, comparing?
J’ai un cœur qui sait
I have a heart that knows
Quand il a raison
When it is right
Et puisqu’il a pris ton nom
And since it embraced your name
Toi mon amour, mon ami
You my love, my friend
Quand je rêve c’est de toi
When I dream, it’s about you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Quand je chante c’est pour toi
When I sing, it’s for you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Je ne peux vivre sans toi
I cannot live without you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Et je sais très bien pourquoi
And I don’t quite know why
On ne sait jamais jusqu’où ira l’amour
One never knows where love can go to
Et moi qui croyais
And I, who believed
Pouvoir t’aimer
Being able to love you
Toujours
Always
Qui je t’ai quitté
who has left you
Et j’ai beau résister
And though I tried resisting
Je chante parfois à d’autres que toi
I often sing to others than you
Un peu moins bien chaque fois
Each time not as good as before
Toi, mon amour, mon ami
You, my love, my friend
Quand je rêve, c’est de toi
When I dream, it’s about you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Quand je chante, c’est pour toi
When I sing, it’s for you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Je ne peux vivre sans toi
I cannot live without you
Mon amour, mon ami
My love, my friend
Et je ne sais pas pourquoi
And I do not know why

Rob:
Is ‘Mon amour’ said by a woman to man and ‘Ma amour’ by man to woman? I understood mon=masculine and ma=femine.
Would appreciate clarification thanks.
Hichem:
@Rob Hello Rob!
The answer is actually quite easy: Since amour is a masculin noun, one must always say mon amour, whether addressing a male or a female.
I hope it is clear for you now!
Rob:
Hichem Thanks for your prompt reply.
Hichem:
