Frohes neues Jahr! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday and a great end to 2016. Now that Christmas is over and it’s back to work, I’ve made a post for anyone who’s new here and learning German from scratch (or anyone who needs a refresher!). In this post I’ll show you how to say basic, useful sentences and also some helpful vocabulary to get you going.

sie she (when written with a capital “S” it is also the formal word of “you”)

Introducing Yourself in German
Hallo, Ich heisse Larissa Hello, I’m called Larissa
Wie heisst du?/wie heissen Sie? Whats your name?/formal version
Ich komme aus England I come from England
Ich wohne in Deutschland I live in Germany
Wo wohnst du?/wo wohnen Sie? Where do you live?/formal version
Ich bin 23 Jahre alt I am 23 years old
Wie alt bist du? How old are you?
Helpful sentences
Ich habe einen Termin mit… I have an appointment with…
Ich brauche hilfe I need help
Ich habe mich verlaufen I am lost
Ich habe meine Tasche verloren I have lost my bag
Basic conversation
Wie geht es dir? How are you?
Mir geht es gut danke, und dir? I am well thank you, and yourself?
Ich habe hunger I am hungry
Ich bin müde I am tired
Ich bin nervös I am nervous
Ich bin glücklich I am happy
