Grüß Gott! Ich wünsche Ihnen ein Frohes Neues Jahr.

Let’s go over some of the words and expressions while keeping in mind the context of my Eishalle story.

We’ll start with, “Grüß Gott! ” This greeting literally means, “Greetings to God” It is commonly used in Bavaria, but you will find that people in surrounding regions use it as well. If you are greeted with a Grüß Gott! You reply with the same greeting.

Tja – Yeah, well…

Tatsächlich – Indeed…

Du meine Güte! – My goodness!

Erstaunlich! – Amazing!

Plötzlich – All of a sudden…

Über alles – Above everything else…

Dieser Typ ist einfach klasse! – This guy is first-rate!

Klar – Of course…

Ich hoffe meine Geschichte hat Ihnen Spaß gemacht – I hope that you enjoyed my story.

Macht’s gut und bis zum nächsten Mal – I hope everything goes well, and until next time.

Tschüss – Bye

    Hi Nathalie,

    Can you also tell some words which are used in a particular region only. Like in Swabia they have there own set of words which are predominant in that region itself and also in Berlin I have heard that they have their own vocab. Its fun to learn how the language differs according to the region.

    I am really enjoying you new German blog and look forword to each new one. I would find it even more helpful for my Germnan if you wrote more in German and less in English.

    Or do the entire Blog in German and follow it with an English translation. That would really be am besten, finde ich.
