Γεια σας! This post is about the old  words that have been replaced by others. If you have a Greek grand parent who left Greece in the 50’s, you are very likely to hear one of these words sometime!

1.η γομολάστιχα: eraser. Now: γόμα. In some places, they use the word σβήστρα from the verb σβήνω (to erase).

Να πάρω τη γομολάστιχά σου; Ξέχασα τη δική μου στο σπίτι.

Can I take your eraser? I forgot mine at home.

2.ο καμπινές: restroom. Now: η τουαλέτα.

Στα χωριά, ο καμπινές ήταν πάντα έξω από το σπίτι.

In the villages, the restroom was always outside the house.

3.ο κοντυλοφόρος: pen. Now: το στιλό.

Σε ένα παλιό κουτί βρήκα τον κοντυλοφόρο του παππού μου.

I found my grandfather’s pen in an old box.

4.το μοτοσακό:  motorbike. Now: το παπάκι / το παπί.

Ο πατέρας μου όταν έπιασε την πρώτη του δουλειά, αγόρασε ένα μοτοσακό.

When my father got his first job, he bought a motorbike.

5.ο νιαγάρας: toilet flush. Now: το καζανάκι. The toilet flush was named «νιαγάρας» after the brand name “ΝIAGARA”.

Μην ξεχάσεις να τραβήξεις το νιαγάρα!

Don’t forget to flush the toilet!

6.η σάκα: schoolbag. Now: η τσάντα.

Ο Γιαννάκης έβαλε το αριθμητήριο στη σάκα του.

Little Yannis put the abacus in his schoolbag.

7.τα σπορτέξ: sneakers. Now: τα αθλητικά (παπούτσια).

Η Μαίρη πήρε δώρο για τα γενέθλιά της ένα ζευγάρι σπορτέξ.

Mary got as a birthday present a pair of sneakers.

8.η τέσα: bucket. Now: ο κουβάς.

«Πού να βάλω τα ξύλα;» «Μέσα στην τέσα.»

“Where should I put the logs?” “In the bucket.”

9.το τόπι: ball. Now: η μπάλα.

Η Λένα παίζει με την κούκλα της και ο πέτρος παίζει με το τόπι του.

Lena is playing with her doll and Petros is playing with his ball.

10.το τσακμάκι: lighter. Now: ο αναπτήρας.

Πάρε το τσακμάκι και άναψε το πετρογκάζι.

Take the lighter and light the gas cooker.

11.η τσίκλα: chewing gum. Now: η τσίχλα

Τα παιδιά μασάνε τσίκλες με μέντα.

The children are chewing gums with mint.
