In the last days, many views have been expressed about the Greek referendum, the economic crisis and the practical problems that Greece has to deal with. In this post you can find some basic information about the Greek system of government which is much different than the American one.
Στην Ελλάδα η μοναρχία καταργήθηκε με το Δημοψήφισμα του 1974. (Stin Elada i monarhia katargithiki me to dimopsifisma tou 1974). In Greece, the monarchy was abolished after the referendum in 1974.
Το πολίτευμα της Ελλάδας είναι Προεδρευόμενη Κοινοβουλευτική Δημοκρατία. (To politevma tis Eladas ine proedrevomeni kinovouleftiki dimokratia) . Greece is a presidential parliamentary democracy.
Η κυβέρνηση καθορίζει την πολιτική της χώρας με βάση το σύνταγμα και τους νόμους. (I kivernisi kathorizi tin politiki tis horas me vasi to sintagma ke tous nomous) The government defines the political plan based on the constitution and laws.
Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας δεν παίρνει πολιτικές αποφάσεις. Η κυβέρνηση αποτελείται από τον Πρωθυπουργό και τους Υπουργούς. (O proedros tis dimocratias den perni politikes apofasis. I kivernisi apotelite apo ton prothipourgo ke tous ipourgous). The President of the Republic does not take political decisions. The government consists of the prime Minister and the Ministers.
Κάθε τέσσερα χρόνια γίνονται βουλευτικές εκλογές. Ψηφίζουν οι πολίτες που έχουν συμπληρώσει το δέκατο όγδοο έτος της ηλικίας τους. (Kathe tesera hronia ginonte vouleftikes ekloges. Psifizoun I polites pou ehoun siblirosi to dekato ogdoo etos tis ilikias tous) The elections are held every four years. The citizens who have reached the age of eighteen can vote.
Ο αρχηγός του κόμματος που έχει τις περισσότερες έδρες στη Βουλή γίνεται πρωθυπουργός. Τα άλλα κόμματα αποτελούν την αντιπολίτευση. (O arhigos tou komatos pou ehei tis perisoteres edres sti vouli ginetai prothipourgos. Ta ala komata apoteloun tin antipolitefsi). The leader of the party that has the most seats in Parliament becomes Prime Minister. The other parties form the opposition.
