How to express anger

#1. There are many words and phrases which mean to be angry.

• Είμαι νευριασμένος-η
• είμαι θυμωμένος-η-ο
• έχω τα νεύρα μου
• θυμώνω
• τσαντίζομαι (informal)
• είμαι τσαντισμένος-η-ο (informal)

Examples:

Μην του μιλάτε τώρα είναι θυμωμένος και δεν ακούει κανέναν. / Don’t talk to him now, he’s angry and he won’t listen to anyone.

Όταν άκουσα τις ηλίθιες δικαιολογίες του, τσαντίστηκα. When I heard his stupid excuses, I got angry.

To αφεντικό μας έχει τα νεύρα του από το πρωί. Μιλάει άσχημα στους πελάτες, φωνάζει στη γραμματέα του… / Our boss is angry all morning. He talks badly to the customers, he yells at his secretary…

 

#2. μου τη δίνει: someone / something) makes me crazy

Example:

Αμάν, ρε Γιάννη, μην πίνεις τον καφέ μου, μου τη δίνει!

 

#3. τα πήρα / τα ‘χω πάρει (slang). The expression is “τα πήρα στο κρανίο” . Παίρνω means to get or to take and κρανίο means skull.

Example:

H Μαρία τα’χει πάρει με τον Άρη γιατί αντέγραφε απ’ αυτήν και η καθηγήτρια τούς πήρε τα γραπτά. / Maria is very angry with Aris because he copied from her and the teacher confiscated their answer sheets.

 

#4. There are also expressions which mean to be outraged or furious:

• βγήκα εκτός εαυτού: literally, I got out of myself.
• έγινα έξω φρενών, είμαι έξω φρενών
• εξοργίζομαι
• είμαι εξοργισμένος-η-ο
• εξαγριώνομαι
• είμαι εξαγριωμένος-η-ο

Examples:

Η Ελίζα έγινε έξω φρενών όταν η αδερφή της έβαλε το φόρεμά της χωρίς να τη ρωτήσει. / Elisa was furious when her sister took her dress without permission.

Όταν ανακάλυψε ότι τόσον καιρό ο φίλος του έλεγε ψέματα, εξοργίστηκε. / When he found out that his friend was telling him lies for so long, he got furious.

Όταν η μαμά του τού είπε ότι δεν μπορούσε να του αγοράσει το παιχνίδι, το αγοράκι βγήκε εκτός εαυτού, άρχισε να βρίζει και να κυλιέται στο πεζοδρόμιο. / When his mom told him that she could not buy him the toy, the little boy lost his mind, started swearing and rolling on the sidewalk.

 

#5. (κάτι / κάποιος) μου σπάει τα νεύρα: literally, someone or something breaks my nerves.

Αυτή η συμπεριφορά, μου σπάει τα νεύρα. This behavior, is very annoying (breaks my nerves).

 

#6. αγανακτώ: to be indignant / είμαι αγανακτισμένος-η-ο: I am indignant

Example: Όλοι αγανάκτισαν με τα νέα μέτρα της κυβέρνησης. / They were all indignant because of the new measure imposed by the government.

 

How to express surprise

εξεπλάγην: I was surprised (dated)

μένω / είμαι έκπληκτος-η: to be surprised

μένω / είμαι κατάπληκτος-η: to be astounded

Όλοι έμειναν έκπληκτοι με τη ζωγραφιά του παιδιού. They were all surprised by the child’s drawing.

Note that the phrases μένω / είμαι έκπληκτος και μένω / είμαι κατάπληκτος are not followed by να. This is a direct translation from I was surprised to. For example, the sentence “I was surprised to see her there” is not translated as “Ήμουν έκπληκτος να τη δω εκεί.” We would say “Ήμουν έκπληκτος που την είδα εκεί” or , if we want to be more casual, “Δεν περίμενα να τη δω εκεί”. (I did not expect to see her there).

δεν πιστεύω στα μάτια μου: literally, I don’t believe in my eyes

Example:

Όταν άνοιξαν το κουτί και είδαν τι είχε μέσα δεν πίστευαν στα μάτια τους. / When they opened the box and saw what there was inside, they did not believe in their eyes.

έμεινα (colloquial). Past Simple of μένω which means to stay or to remain.

Όταν είδαν μπροστά τους τη μητέρα τους έμειναν. / When they saw their mother in front of them they stood petrified.

σαστίζω: to be dazed

Example:

Mόλις τους ανακοίνωσε την απόφασή του ήταν τόσο σαστισμένοι που δε μίλησε κανείς. / As soon as he announced them his decision, they were so dazed that nobody spoke.

μου κόπηκαν τα πόδια. We use this expression when we are unpleasantly surprised. It means my legs cannot support me (literally, my legs are cut).

Example:

Όταν διάβασε το σημείωμα του γιου της, της κόπηκαν τα πόδια. / When she read her son’s note, she was petrified.
