On October 28 we celebrate the Oxi Day ( Επέτειος του Όχι). Events to honor the war heroes are held everywhere in Greece. The topic of this entry is a list of words and phrases related to memory. Note that some of the English words derive from Greek!

θυμάμαι: to remember

θυμίζω: to remind

Η Έλλη συμπαθεί τον Αντρέα γιατί της θυμίζει τον γιο της. Ellie likes Andreas because he reminds her of her son.

υπενθυμίζω: to remind

Σας υπενθυμίζω τη συμφωνία μας.  I remind you of our agreement.

υπενθύμιση (η): reminder

Έβαλα υπενθύμιση για το ραντεβού μου. I set the reminder up for my appointment

μνήμη (η): memory

Θυμάται όλα τα τηλέφωνα των φίλων του γιατί έχει πολύ καλή μνήμη. He remembers all his friends’ telephone numbers because he has very good memory.΄

έχω μνήμη ελέφαντα: Ι have a memory like an elephant

μνημόσυνο (το): memorial

They planned a memorial for the victims of the war.

απομνημονεύω: to memorize

Η δασκάλα δεν θέλει να απομνημονεύουν οι μαθητές της το λεξιλόγιο. The teacher doesn’t want her students to memorize the vocabulary.

απομνημόνευση (η): memorization

Οι μαθητές δυσκολεύονται στην απομνημόνευση ιστορικών γεγονότων. The students find the memorization of historical events difficult.

απομνημονεύματα (τα): memoirs

Έγραψε τα απομνημονεύματά της σε ηλικία εβδομήντα χρονών.  She wrote her memoirs at the age of 70.

μνημονικός: mnemonic

Χρησιμοποιούν μνημονικές τεχνικές για να βελτιώσουν τη μνήμη τους. They use mnemonic techniques to improve their memory.

μνημόνιο (το): memorandum

Πιστεύουν ότι η Ελλάδα θα χρειαστεί και άλλο μνημόνιο. They believe that Greece will need another memorandum.

ανάμνηση (η): memory

Έχουν καλές αναμνήσεις από την παιδική τους ηλικία. They have good memories from their childhood.

άνοια (η): dementia

Η γιαγιά μου έχει άνοια. Δεν με αναγνωρίζει πια. My grandmother has dementia. She doesn’t recognize me anymore.

αμνησία (η): amnesia

Μετά το ατύχημα έπαθε αμνησία. After the accident she had amnesia.

ξεχνάω: to forget

Μην ξεχάσεις να κλειδώσεις την πόρτα. Don’t forget to lock the door.

ξεχασιάρης: forgetful

Πάλι ξέχασες το πορτοφόλι σου; Είσαι πολύ ξεχασιάρης! You forgot your wallet again? You are very forgetful!

λησμονώ: to forget

Μάτια που δεν βλέπονται γρήγορα λησμονιούνται. Out of sight, out of mind. (Eyes not seen are soon forgotten, lit.)

λήθη (η): oblivion

Στην Οδύσσεια, ο λωτός είναι ο καρπός της λήθης. In Odyssey, persimmon is the fruit of oblivion.
