Γεια σας! Some learners ignore basic group of words that are frequently used. Some of these are common and are used in daily conversations, while others can be heard on the news or read in a magazine or newspaper.

 

Οι αισθήσεις- The senses

• όραση (η): vision

Μετά το ατύχημα έχασε την όρασή του. / After the accident he lost his vision.

Ο οφθαλμίατρος είναι ο γιατρός που ελέγχει την όρασή μας. / An ophthalmologist is a doctor who checks our vision.

• ακοή (η): hearing

Ο σκύλος μας έχει πολύ καλή ακοή. / Our dog’s hearing is very good.

Μετά το ατύχημα, έχασε το 20% της ακοής του. / After the accident he lost 20% of his hearing.

• γεύση (η): taste

Η Μαρίνα έχει γρίπη. Δεν έχει γεύση. / Marina has the flu. She has loss of taste.

Αυτό το φαγητό έχει πολύ ωραία γεύση! / This food tastes very good!

• όσφρηση (η): smell

Η απώλεια της όσφρησης είναι ένα από τα συμπτώματα του COVID-19. / The loss of smell is one of the symptoms of COVID-19.

Το λαγωνικό έχει πολύ καλή όσφρηση. / The hound dog’s smell is very good.

• αφή (η): touch

Αυτό το ύφασμα είναι πολύ ωραίο στην αφή. / This fabric is nice to touch.

Όλα τα κινητά έχουν οθόνη αφής. / All cell phones have a touch screen.

 

Οι γεύσεις – Τhe tastes

• Πικρός-η-ο: bitter

Δεν μπορεί να πιει καφέ χωρίς ζάχαρη γιατί είναι πικρός. / She cannot drink coffee without sugar because it is bitter.

Μη φας αυτά τα αμύγδαλα, είναι πολύ πικρά. / Don’t eat these almonds, they are too bitter.

• Γλυκός-ιά-ό: sweet

Το γαλακτομπούρεκο είναι πολύ γλυκό. Δεν μπορώ να το φάω/ The galaktoboureko is too sweet. I cannot eat it.

Πάρε τούρτα. Δεν έχει πολύ ζάχαρη και δεν είναι γλυκιά. / Take some cake. It has not much sugar and it is not sweet.

• Αλμυρός-ή-ό: salty, savory

Τα τυροπιτάκια είναι πολύ αλμυρά. / The cheese pies are too salty.

Ο καφές είναι αλμυρός. Μήπως έβαλες αλάτι αντί για ζάχαρη; / The coffee is too salty. Did you put salt instead of sugar, by any chance?

• Ξινός-ή-ό: sour

Το γάλα δεν είναι καλό. Είναι ξινό. / The milk is not good. It is sour.

Αυτά τα φρούτα είναι άγουρα και ξινά. / These fruits are unripe and sour.

• Ουμάμι: umami (it is very trendy at the moment)
  

Ένας Ιάπωνας ανακάλυψε το ουμάμι. / Umami was discovered by a Japanese.

Το ουμάμι είναι ένας συνδυασμός γεύσεων. / Umami is a combination of tastes.
