The last days of January have been challenging. A heavy snowstorm hit Greece, especially Athens, and the country was totally unprepared to face the challenge. The snowstorm that was, ironically, called “Ελπίς” (i.e. “Hope”) , left many areas without electricity, blocked the streets of Athens, letting many drivers trapped in their cars and debunked the myth that “Greece is always hot and sunny”.

In this post, there is a list of words and phrases about bad weather. You can find idioms and standard expressions about cold here.

#1. ακραία καιρικά φαινόμενα: extreme weather


Τα σχολεία έκλεισαν γιατί αναμένονται ακραία καιρικά φαινόμενα.

The schools were closed because extreme weather is expected.


#2. Εγκλωβισμένος-η-ο: trapped, locked in

εγκλωβίζω-ομαι: to lock in (active and passive)


Οι οδηγοί έμειναν εγκλωβισμένοι στα αυτοκίνητά τους όταν οι δρόμοι έκλεισαν λόγω χιονιού.

The drivers were trapped in their cars when the roads were covered in snow.


#3. εκχιονιστικό μηχάνημα (το): winter service vehicle


Τα εκχιονιστικά μηχανήματα δεν είχαν καύσιμα.

The winter service vehicles had no fuel.


#4. σφοδρός-η-ο: heavy / strong


Σφοδρή κακοκαιρία έπληξε ακρετές περιοχές.

Full weather hit many regions.


#5. αλυσίδες (η αλυσίδα): chain

#6. αντιολισθητικός-η-ο: non-skid


Μην πας στο βουνό χωρίς (αντιολησθητικές) αλυσίδες.

Don’t go to the mountain without snow chains.


#7. χιονιάς (ο): freezing weather


O χιονιάς προκάλεσε πολλά προβλήματα στους κατοίκους του απομακρυσμένου χωριού.

The freezing weather caused many problems to the residents of the remote village.


#8. χιονόνερο (το): sleet


Ρίχνει χιονόνερο όλη μέρα.

It has been sleeting all day.


#9. χιονόπτωση (η): χιόνι (snow) + πτώση (fall)


To ρεύμα κόπηκε εξαιτίας της χιονόπτωσης.

The electricity was cut because of the snowfall.


#10. λιώνω: to melt


Έβρεξε και το χιόνι έλιωσε.

It rained and the snow melted.


#11.πάγος (ο): ice


Mην περπατάς στον πάγο χωρίς τα κατάλληλα παπούτσια.

Don’t walk on ice without the right shoes.



Παροιμίες – Proverbs:

#1. Μαθημένα τα βουνά απ’ τα χιόνια / Μαθημένα τα βουνά στα χιόνια: we use it to mean that we have faced challenges.


– Πάλι έμεινες χωρίς δουλειά; Και τι θα κάνεις τώρα;

– Κάτι θα βρω. Μαθημένα τα βουνά στα χιόνια…

– Have you lost your job again? What will you do know?

– I’ll find something. I am no stranger to challenges…

#2. Σαν τα χιόνια!: we use this phrase when we see a person we haven’t seen in a long time.

Βρε, καλώς τον Βασίλη! Σαν τα χιόνια!

Hi Vasilis! Long time no see!

#3. Βρέξει-χιονίσει: no matter what

O ηλεκτρολόγος υποσχέθηκε ότι θα έρθει αύριο, βρέξει-χιονίσει.

The electrician said he will come tomorrow, no matter what.
