Last Sunday (April 7), we celebrated  World Health Day. The Greek word for health is υγεία. In Greek mythology, Goddess Υγεία (Hygeia), the personification of  health, was connected to  the prevention (πρόληψη) of a disease. In this post there is vocabulary about health.

υγεία (η): health.  Related words  are υγιεινός-η-ο (healthy). The words hygiene and hygienic derive from υγεία.

νόσος (η): disease.  Related words are νοσοκομείο (hospital) and νοσοκόμος-νοσοκόμα (nurse).  English words deriving form νόσος are nosology and nosophobia.

ασθένεια (η): disease. In everyday life we use the word «αρρώστια».

ασθενής  (ο, η): patient

άρρωστος-η-ο: ill

φάρμακο: medicine

φαρμακείο: pharmacy

χάπι (το): pill

θεραπεία: cure, therapy

αίμα (το): blood

τραύμα (το): wound

έγκαυμα (το): sunburn, burn

ένεση (η): injection

εμβόλιο (το): vaccine

χάνω βάρος: to lose wight

 

Phrases

I don’t feel well: Δεν αισθάνομαι καλά.

I need a pharmacy: Χρειάζομαι ένα φαρμακείο.

I am in pain: Πονάω.

I have a headache: Έχω πονοκέφαλο.

I have a stomachache: Πονάει το στομάχι μου.

I feel dizzy: Ζαλίζομαι.

I have a fever: Έχω πυρετό.

I have a sunstroke: Έχω ηλίαση.

Do you have a painkiller?: Μήπως έχεις ένα παυσίπονο;

Which hospital is on call tonight?: Ποιο νοσοκομείο εφημερεύει σήμερα;

Which pharmacy is on call?: Ποιο φαρμακείο εφημερεύει;

Which is the nearest hospital?: Ποιο είναι το πιο κοντινό νοσοκομείο;

I have private health insurance: Έχω ιδιωτική ασφάλεια.

Outpatient health-care: εξωτερικά ιατρεία.

I am allergic to…: Έχω αλλεργία σε…

I was stung by (a wasp): Με τσίμπησε (μία σφήκα).

To lose consciousness: Χάνω τις αισθήσεις μου.

Ι am on medication: Παίρνω φάρμακα

I can’t walk: Δεν μπορώ να περπατήσω.

We need an ambulance: Χρειαζόμαστε ασθενοφόρο.

I need a doctor who speaks English: Θέλω έναν γιατρό που να μιλάει αγγλικά.

 

Remember:

  • If you visit Greece in the summer, it is better to avoid the sun during a heatwave.
  • If you need an ambulance, call 166.
  • If you are on medication, it would be good to write down all the medicines you take on a card and always carry it with you.
  • If you visit a doctor or a hospital, you must always get a receipt for the services provided.
