Tomorrow Greece and the other European countries will have daylight saving time. In this post, there is a list of phrases and words related to time, which will expand your vocabulary.

 

#1. Daylight saving time: η θερινή ώρα

Η θερινή ώρα εφαρμόζεται μέχρι το τέλος του Οκτωβρίου. / Daylight Saving Time is applied until the end of October.

 

#2. PST: η χειμερινή ώρα

H χειμερινή ώρα αρχίζει στο τέλος Οκτωβρίου. / PST starts at the end of October. (literally)

 

#3. time difference: η διαφορά ώρας

Η Αθήνα έχει δύο ώρες διαφορά με το Λονδίνο. / Athens is two hour different from London.

Είμαι δύο εβδομάδες στην Αθήνα και ακόμα δεν έχω συνηθίσει την διαφορά ώρας. / I am in Athens for two weeks and I’m still not used to the time difference.

 

#4. set my clock / watch one hour ahead: γυρίζω το ρολόι μου μία ώρα μπροστά

Την Κυριακή στις 3 το πρωί πρέπει να γυρίσουμε τα ρολόγια μας μία ώρα μπροστά. / On Sunday at 3 a.m. we have to set our clocks / watches one hour ahead.

 

#5. set my clock / watch one hour back: γυρίζω το ρολόι μου μία ώρα πίσω

Πρέπει να γυρίσεις το ρολόι σου μία ώρα πίσω. / You have to set your watch one hour back.

 

#6. Do you know what time is it?: έχεις / έχετε ώρα;

«Συγγνώμη, μήπως έχετε ώρα;» «Ναι, είναι οκτώ και πέντε.»

“Excuse-me, do you know what time is it?” “Yes, it’s 20:05.”

 

#7. My watch has stopped: το ρολόι μου σταμάτησε.

Μήπως έχεις ώρα; Το ρολόι μου σταμάτησε. / (Perhaps) do you know what time is it? My watch has stopped.

 

#8. The clock is ahead / the clock is back: πάω μπροστά / πάω πίσω

«Είναι έξι παρά είκοσι πέντε.» «Πας πέντε λεπτά μπροστά.» / “It’s 17:35.” “You’re five minutes ahead.”(lit.)

 

#9. to be punctual: είμαι ακριβής

Ο Φοίβος είναι πάντα ακριβής στα ραντεβού του. / Phoevos always arrives on time to his appointments.

 

#10. to stand someone up: στήνω κάποιον

Είχα ραντεβού με την Ειρήνη στις επτά αλλά με έστεισε. / I had an appointment with Irini at 7 but she stood me up.

 

#11. delay: η καθυστέρηση

Το λεωφορείο είχε ένα τέταρτο καθυστέρηση. / The bus had a one-quarter delay.

 

Παροιμίες – Proverbs

#1. Όσα φέρνει η ώρα δεν τα φέρνει ο χρόνος. This means that the things we were waiting for a long time can happen very quickly at the right moment.

#2. Ο χρόνος είναι χρήμα. Time is money.

#3. Βρήκε το μήνα που θρέφει τους έντεκα. Literally, it means that someone found the month who feeds the other eleven. We use it to refer to someone who found a great opportunity.

#4. Έχει  καιρός γυρίσματα. What goes around comes around.
