Christmas is coming! In this post there is vocabulary about the activities related to Christmas.  Καλά Χριστούγεννα!

 

#1.λέω / τραγουδώ τα κάλαντα: to sing the Christmas carol.

Τα παιδιά έβγαλαν διακόσια ευρώ τραγουδώντας τα κάλαντα. / The children made 200 euros by singing the carol.

In the 24^th of December the children go to their neighbors’ to sing the carol and they get money.

#2.παίζω το τρίγωνο: to play the triangle.

Σήμερα τρία παιδάκια ήρθαν στο σπίτι μου και μου είπαν τα κάλαντα. Το ένα τραγουδούσε, το άλλο έπαιζε μελόντικα και το τρίτο έπαιζε το τρίγωνο. / Today three little kids came to my house and sang the carol for me. One of them was singing, the other one was playing the melodica, and the third one was playing the triangle.

#3.φτιάχνω μελομακάρονα / κουραμπιέδες: φτιάχνω means  “to make”. Μελομακάρονα and κουραμπιέδες are traditional sweets that we make for Christmas. They are like cookies.

Η Στέλλα έφτιαξε μελομακάρονα και κουραμπιέδες με τα ανίψια της. / Stella made melomakarona and kourabiedes with her nephews and nieces.

#4.οργανώνω ένα χριστουγεννιάτικο μπαζάρ: to organize a Christmas bazaar.

Το σχολείο μας οργανώνει κάθε χρόνο χριστουγεννιάτικο μπαζάρ. / Every year our school organizes a Christmas bazaar.

#5.πηγαίνω σε μπαζάρ: to go to a bazaar.

Το Σάββατο θα πάω σε τρία μπαζάρ. / On Saturday I will go to three bazaars.

#6.στολίζω το δέντρο: to adorn the (Christmas) tree

Οι γείτονές μας στόλισαν το δέντρο τους την 1^η Δεκεμβρίου. / Our neighbors adorned their tree on the 1^st of December.

#7.τα στολίδια: ornaments

Η κόρη μου έφτιαξε στο νηπιαγωγείο στολίδια για το δέντρο μας. / My daughter made ornaments for our tree at kindergarten.

#8.οι καλικάντζαροι (ο καλικάντζαρος): goblins

Δεν πρέπει να αφήνουμε φαγητά και γλυκά στο τραπέζι τη νύχτα γιατί τα τρώνε οι καλλικάτζαροι. . We must not leave food and sweets on the table during the night because the goblins eat them.

The Greek folklore includes many stories about the goblins.

#9.η παραμονή: the day before, the eve.

Την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων υπάρχει πολλή κίνηση στα μαγαζιά. / The stores are very busy on Christmas Eve.

#10.η αλλαγή του χρόνου: the change of the year

η παραμονή της Πρωτοχρονιάς: New Year’s Eve.

«Τι θα κάνετε την αλλαγή του χρόνου; / Τι θα κάνετε την παραμονή της Πρωτοχρονιάς» «Θα μείνουμε στο σπίτι και θα παίξουμε χαρτιά.»  / “What will you do on New Year’s Eve?” / “We will stay home and play cards.”

# 13. Ο Άγιος Βασίλης: Santa Claus

Στην Ελλάδα ο Άγιος Βασίλης έρχεται την παραμονή της Πρωτοχρονιάς. / In Greece, Santa Claus comes on New Year’s Eve.
