At the restaurant, cafe, or snack bar, wherever you go to eat or have a snack, you may have some dietary restrictions to keep in mind. Some are voluntary, others may be for health reasons. So you need to be prepared with the following phrases – just in case you need them.

Eating kosher or organic

Is there a kosher restaurant here? – יֵשׁ מִסעָדָה כָּשֵׁרָה בַּסְבִיבָה?
Is this kosher? – הַאִם זה כָּשֵׁר?
Is this organic? – הַאִם זה אוֹרְגָנִי?

Vegetarian

I’m a vegetarian (m.) – אני צִמחוֹנִי
I’m a vegetarian (f.) – אני צִמחוֹנִית
Do you have any vegetarian dishes? – יֵשׁ לָכֶם מַאֲכָלִים צִמחוֹנִיים?
Can I get this without meat? – אֶפְשָׁר לְקַבֵּל את המָנָה הזֹאת בְּלִי בָּשָׂר?
Does it contain eggs? – יֵשׁ בָזֶה בֵּיצִים?

I don’t eat [meat] (m.) – [בָּשָׂר]אני לא אוֹכֵל
I don’t eat [meat] (f.) – [בָּשָׂר]אני לא אוֹכֵלֶת
chicken – עוֹף
fish – דָג
ham – הָם

Health and allergies

I can’t eat dairy products (m.) – אני לא אוכל מוּצְרֵי חָלָב.
I can’t eat dairy products (f.) – אני לא אוכלת מוּצְרֵי חָלָב.

I’m allergic to [peanuts] (masc) – אני אָלֶרְגִּי ל[ בוטנים]
I’m allergic to [peanuts] (fem) – אני אָלֶרְגִּית ל[ בוטנים]
milk – חָלָב
eggs – בֵּיצִים
tree nuts – אֱגוֹזי עֵץ
(walnuts, cashews, almonds) – (שָׁקֵדִים, אֱגוֹז קַשְׁיוֹ, אֱגוֹז מֶלֶךְ)

fish – דָג
shellfish – רַכִּיכָה
(shrimp, lobster, crab) – (סַרְטָן, לוֹבְּסְטֶר, שְׁרִימְפְּס)

soy – סוֹיָה
wheat – חִטָּה
