I have been watching a lot of Bollywood songs lately and it set me thinking about how songs possess the ability to be great teachers. There are so many catchy lyrics and tunes that have helped students learn difficult academic concepts.

Hence, I thought I’d use a Bollywood tune to introduce counting in Hindi, or हिंदी गिनती (Hindi ginati. I’ll begin with a song from the film Tezaab. This toot-tapping song, featuring a bubbly Madhuri Dixit, took the audiences by storm and to this day, remains immensely popular.

This brings us to counting numbers or cardinal numbers in Hindi. We will look at numbers 1-20.

VOCABULARY

एक –  १  ek one
दो – २  do two
तीन – ३ teen three
चार –  ४ char four
पाँच – ५ paanch five
छह –  ६ chhe six
सात –  ७ saat seven
आठ –  ८ aath eight
नौ –  ९  nau nine
दस –  १०  dus ten
ग्यारह –  ११  gyarah eleven
बारह – १२  baarah twelve
तेरह –  १३  terah thirteen
चौदह –  १४  chaudah fourteen
 पंद्रह –  १५  pandhrah fifteen
सोलह –  १६  solah sixteen
सतरह – १७  satarah seventeen
अठारह –  १८  athaarah eighteen
उन्नीस –  १९  unnees nineteen
बीस –  २०  bees twenty
