Confusing Words in Hindi – II Posted by on Aug 26, 2012 in Hindi Language

In continuation of my post on the confusing words in Hindi, I would like to present some more words which are strikingly similar in form and their pronunciation but their meaning are different. Confusing words like कहा (Kaha) and कहाँ (Kahan) looks almost similar in Hindi but they mean completely different “Said” and “Where” in English respectively.

I have made a short list of new confusing words in Hindi. Hope you’ll pay attention.

The pronunciation (Romanized Hindi) as well as their meaning in English is given.

असमान (Asmaan – Unequal)

अपकार (Apkaar – Letdown)
उपकार (Upkaar – Beneficence)

अपेक्षा (Apeksha – Expectation)
उपेक्षा (Upeksha – Neglect)

उदार (Udaar – Generous)
उदर (Udar – Abdomen)

नय (Nay – Ethics)
नव (Nav – New)

कहा (Kaha – Said)
कहाँ (Kahan – Where)

चरित (Charit – Biography)
चरित्र (Charitr – Character)

भवन (Bhavan – Building)
भुवन (Bhuvan – World)

दूत (Dut – Envoy)
धूर्त (Dhurt – Sly)

प्रतिमा (Pratima – Statue)
प्रतिभा (Pratibha – Talent)

पवन (Pavan – Ancient)
पावन (Paavan – Cloths)

बहन (Bahan – Sister)
वहन (Vahan – Bearing)

भाषण (Bhaashan – Speech)
भीषण (Bhishan – Gruesome)

मास (Maas – Month)
माँस (Maans – Meat)

मूल (Mul – Basic)
मूल्य (Muly – Price)

मौर (Maur – Crown)
मोर (Maur – Peacock)

योग्य (Yogy – Suitable)
योग (Yog – Match)

राज्य (Raajy – State)
राज (Raaj – Rule)

लौटना (Lautna – to return)
लोटना (Lautna – to sprawl)

विषमय (Vishamay – Virulent/Poisoned)
विस्मय (Vismay – Astonishment)
