In Hindi, Conjunction is called समुच्चयबोधक (Samucchybodhak) which comes from two words, समुच्चय which means combination and बोधक which means indicator. Conjunctions are the words which combine two clauses in a given sentence.

In Hindi, Conjunctions are of 2 types. These are समानाधिकरण समुच्चयबोधक (Samaanaadhikaran Samucchybodhak – Coordinate Conjunction) and व्यधिकरण समुच्चयबोधक (Vyadhikaran Samucchybodhak – Subordinate Conjunction).

In this post, let me show you Coordinate Conjunctions in Hindi. These are the conjunctions which are used to join the similar clauses. The coordinate conjunctions are of 4 types.

1. संयोजक (Sanyojak – Connective)
These conjunctive words join two or more part to form a sentence. These are और (aur – and), एव (ev – and) and तथा (tatha – and).

Examples:

a. श्याम और राम एक ही घर में रहते हैं.
Shyam and ram live in same house.
b. राकेश एव रमेश अच्छे मित्र हैं.
Rakesh and Ramesh are good friends.
c. सेब तथा नारंगी फल हैं.
Apple and Orange are fruits.

2. विकल्पक (Vikalpak – Alternative Indicator)
These conjunctive words indicate the options in a sentence. These are या (ya – or), अथवा (athva – or) and अन्यथा (anyatha – otherwise).

Examples:

a. तुम काम कर सकते हो या पढ़ाई.
You can do work or study.
b. तुम एक गाड़ी अथवा मोटरसाइकिल खरीद लो।  .
Purchase a car or a motorcycle.
c. तुम परिश्रम करो अन्यथा असफल हो जाओगे.
Work hard otherwise you will fail.

3. विरोधदर्शक (Virodh DarshakOpposition Indicator)
These conjunctive words shows the opposition or contradiction in the sentence. These are मगर (magar – but), लेकिन (lekin – but) and परन्तु (parantu – but). Other similar conjunctions are  पर (par), किन्तु (kintu) and बल्कि (balki).

Examples:

a. वह नालायक है मगर पास हो जाता है.
He is useless but he pass the examination.
b. तुम सुबाह से में कार्यालय हो परन्तु तुमने कुछ काम नहीं किया.
You have been in office since morning but you didn’t do anything.

4. परिणामदर्शक (Parinam DarshakOutcome Indicator)
These conjunctive words indicate the outcome in a sentence . These are इसलिए (isliye – that’s why) and परिणामस्वरूप (parinamsavaroop – as a result of) . Other similar conjunctions are  फलत: (par), अत: (kintu) and फलस्वरूप (phalsavaroop).

Examples:

a. राकेश ने परिश्रम नहीं किया परिणामस्वरूप वो परीक्षा में असफल हो गया।
Rakesh didn’t work hard and as a result, he was not successful in his examination.
b. हरीश ने नयी गाड़ी ली है इसलिए वो अब घमंडी हो गया है।
Harish has become arrogant because he brought a new car.
