Supaya/Agar Clauses Posted by on May 30, 2018 in Uncategorized

Unlike an “untuk” clause, a clause introduced by “supaya” or “agar” has a subject.

Occurring as a complement with intransitive verbs of intent, a supaya/agar clause contains a subject which is always different from the subject of the main clause.

Examples:
Kami ingin supaya Anda menolong kami. We want you to help us.
Dia meminta supaya sopir membawa tamunya ke hotel. He asks the driver to take his guest to the hotel.

NOTE
Agar has the same meaning as supaya but is more formal and is mainly used in writing.
Supaya (“in order that”) is used when person A wants, orders, or requests that person B do something.
Examples:
Saya mau pergi. I want to go. (the same person wants and goes)
Saya mau supaya dia pergi. I want him to go. (One person wants and another person goes.)
