Os phrasal verbs são verbos que são compostos por duas ou três palavras: um verbo + uma preposição ou advérbio. São extremamente comuns em inglês e quando têm um objeto seguem algumas regras.

Vejamos o caso do verbo throw out (jogar fora).
I’m going to throw out my old books. (Vou jogar fora meus livros velhos.)

Se quisermos substituir my old books por um pronome, eles (them), o pronome tem de vir entre o verbo e a partícula:
I’m going to throw them out. (Vou jogá-los fora.)

Veja mais alguns exemplos:

You need to fill out this application form. (Você precisa preencher esta ficha.)
You need to fill it out. (Você precisa preenchê-la.)

Are you going to pick up your clothes at the cleaner’s? (Você vai buscar suas roupas na lavanderia?)
Are you going to pick them up at the cleaner’s? (Você vai buscá-las na lavanderia?)

I had to take back the library books. (Tive que devolver os livros da biblioteca.)
I had to take them back. (Tive que devolvê-los.)

Please, show our guest out. (Por favor, acompanhe nosso convidado até a porta.)
Please, show him out. (Por favor, acompanhe-o até a a porta.)

Com alguns verbos, podemos colocar a partícula antes ou depois do objeto, quando ele não for pronome. Veja alguns exemplos:

Did you remember to turn off the oven? (Você se lembrou de desligar o forno?)
Did you remember to turn the oven off?
Did you remember to turn it off?

I took back the videos. (Devolvi os videos.)
I took the videos back.
I took them back.

She filled out the accident report. (Ela preencheu o boletim de ocorrência do acidente.)
She filled the accident report out.
She filled it out.

Did you turn on the alarm? (Você ligou o alarme?)
Did you turn the alarm on?
Did you turn it on?

Please kids, put away your toys. (Por favor crianças, guardem seus brinquedos.)
Please kids, put your toys away.
Please kids, put them away.

Have you handed in your homework yet? (Você já entregou sua tarefa?)
Have you handed your homework in yet?
Have you handed it in yet?

Wake up the kids. (Acorde as crianças.)
Wake the kids up.
Wake them up.

Put on your coat, it’s cold outside. (Coloque seu casaco, está frio lá fora.)
Put your coat on, it’s cold outside.
Put it on, it’s cold outside.

Take off your boots, they’re dirty. (Tire suas botas, estão sujas.)
Take your boots off, they’re dirty.
Take them off, they’re dirty.

I need to hook up my new modem. (Preciso conectar meu novo modem.)
I need to hook my new modem up.
I need to hook it up.

Students, cross out all your mistakes. (Alunos, risquem todos seus erros.)
Students, cross all your mistakes out.
Students, cross them out.
