Ah, a escrita em inglês!

Muitos alunos reclamam que a escrita em inglês é difícil e se comparada ao português, com sua estrutura silábica, é realmente difícil. Mas hoje vou te ajudar com cinco palavras que são muito parecidas, têm poucas vogais e um monte de consoante só pra atormentar nossa vida (acredite, já fui aluno também!).

tough – duro, difícil, árduo
He’s having a really tough time at the moment. – Ele está passando por um momento muito difícil agora.
It was a tough decision to move overseas. – Foi uma decisão dura mudar-se para o exterior.
Many companies are facing tough competition. – Muitas empresas estão enfrentando uma competição acirrada.

though – embora, porém, mas, entretanto
Though the U.K. is only a small country, it has played an important role in history. – Embora o Reino Unido seja um país pequeno, ele tem tido um papel importante na história.
The hike, though difficult, involved no real danger. – A subida, embora difícil, não era muito perigosa.
“The Savoy’s a very nice hotel.” “Isn’t it expensive, though?” – “O Savoy é um hotel muito bom.” “Mas não é caro?”

thought – passado de think (pensar); pensamento
I thought you weren’t going to the party. – Pensei que você não ia à festa.
“How about a cup of coffee?” she said, reading my thoughts. – “Que tal um café?” ela disse, lendo meus pensamentos.
Darwin’s theory dominates biological thought as much today as ever. – A teoria de Darwin domina o pensamento biológico hoje tanto como no passado.

through – através; acabado
The train runs through the tunnel. – O trem passa pelo túnel.
She was watching him through the kitchen window. – Ela o estava observando através da janela da cozinha.
Are you through with your talking? – Já acabou de falar?

throughout – através, no sentido de todo o tempo (during) ou por toda uma superfície
The hotel has recently been redecorated throughout. – O hotel foi completamente redecorado.
Pollution is a serious problem in major cities throughout the world. – A poluição é um sério problema em grandes cidades por todo o mundo.
House prices continued to rise throughout the 1980s. – Os preços de casas continuaram a subir durante os anos 80.
There was a terrible scandal, but my family and friends supported me throughout. – Houve um grande escândalo, mas minha família e amigos me apoiaram durante todo o tempo.
