Na mesma semana, no seriado The Killing, a detetive Sarah corrige seu filho quando ele usa a palavra revenge (vingança) como verbo. Então vamos lá para a explicação!
To avenge é verbo: vingar-se por algo de ruim que alguém fez a você ou a alguém que você gosta. To avenge tem um sentido literário e é muito usado em histórias.
He swore to avenge his father’s death. [Ele jurou vingar a morte de seu pai.] They began to avenge themselves on their relatives for the years of suppression. [Eles começaram a se vingar dos seus parentes por anos de repressão.]
Daí vem o substantio avenger, o tal do vingador!
Agora, para dizer vingança, usamos a palavra revenge, que é só substantivo.
He took revenge on his employers by setting fire to the factory. [Ele se vingou dos seus chefes tocando fogo na fábrica.] She is seeking revenge for the murder of her husband. [Ela quer se vingar pela morte do seu marido.] a bomb attack in revenge for the imprisonment of the terrorists [um ataque com bomba em vingança à prisão dos terroristas] The murder was an act of revenge for the earlier killings. [O assassinato foi um ato de vingança contra as mortes anteriores.] He was determined to have his revenge on her one day. [Ele estava determinado a se vingar dela um dia.]
