Nós dizemos que algo is missing quando queremos expressar que está faltando.

• – Here, try my sauce. Do you think anything is missing? – It’s great, I’d just add a little more black pepper | – Aqui, experimente o meu molho. Você acha que está faltando alguma coisa? – Está ótimo, eu apenas adicionaria um pouco mais de pimenta-do-reino.

• I finished renovating my living room but I still felt like something was missing, so I bought this rug | Terminei de reformar minha sala, mas ainda sentia que estava faltando alguma coisa, então comprei este tapete.

• Is this a picture of my first birthday? Why is dad missing? | Esta é uma foto do meu aniversário de um ano? Por que o papai não está nela?

Também usamos miss ou miss it quando tentamos acertar mas erramos o alvo ou o objetivo.

• The player tried hitting the ball but he missed it | O jogador tentou acertar a bola, mas errou.

• Can you throw your can in that trash can over there? Oops, you missed it! | Você pode jogar sua lata naquela lata de lixo ali? Ops, você errou!

• I got distracted at the roundabout and ended up missing my exit | Me distraí na rotatória e acabei perdendo minha saída.

A expressão to miss the point é muito útil em debates ou discussões, quando você quer dizer que o seu interlocutor não está entendendo direito, ou que ele está focando no problema errado.

• I’m afraid you are missing the point. I definitely don’t think affirmative action is negative, but it should be better implemented, that’s all | Receio que você não está entendendo bem. Com certeza eu não acho que o programa cotas seja negativo, mas deveria ser melhor implementado, só isso.

• Although I agree with him, I still think he’s missing the point. I should explain what I meant better | Embora eu concorde com ele, ainda acho que não é bem assim. Eu deveria explicar melhor o que quis dizer.

• You’re both missing the point. Money is not the issue here, it’s about reducing waste | Vocês dois estão se confundindo. Dinheiro não é a questão aqui, é sobre reduzir o desperdício.
