Greetings, all! Todo mundo tem algum prazer culposo (guilty pleasure) na hora de ver televisão, e admito que ultimamente ando maratonando séries de dramas judiciais, como Better Call Saul ou Suits. Mas uma coisa que chamou minha atenção quando eu estava assistindo – além de pensar em como deve ser terrível ser um lawyer (advogado) – é a quantidade de expressões idiomáticas relacionadas à playing cards (jogo de baralho) que os personagens frequentemente usam.  Nunca fui muito de jogar, mas é interessante notar como esses jogos influenciam o idioma dessa forma. Para além disso, essas frases parecem ser bastante úteis in the business place (no ambiente de trabalho), principalmente se você estiver negociando, discutindo or tentando reach an agreement (chegar a um acordo). So how about we go over some card-related idioms today? to lay your cards on the table | colocar as cartas na mesa, abrir o jogo

to be open, honest and straightforward about your intentions, thoughts or plans, not to keep a secret.

• Listen, it’s time I laid my cards on the table. I have no intention of extending my contract if you don’t increase my wages | Escuta, é hora de abrir o jogo. Não tenho intenção de estender meu contrato se você não aumentar meu salário.
• The manager laid his cards on the table and told his team there would be some layoffs in the next trimester | O gerente colocou suas cartas na mesa e disse à sua equipe que haveria algumas demissões no próximo trimestre.

to have a card up your sleeve | ter uma carta na manga

to have a hidden advantage that you keep a secret waiting for the right circumstances.

• We have to tell the boss that we couldn’t get the deal. Unless you have a card up your sleeve | Temos que dizer ao chefe que não conseguimos o acordo. A menos que você tenha uma carta na manga.

• John didn’t do so well on his job interview, but he’s still got a card up his sleeve: he is very well-connected | John não se deu tão bem na entrevista de emprego, mas ainda tem uma carta na manga: ele é muito bem relacionado.
