A Merry Sexy Christmas Posted by on Dec 19, 2013 in Culture, Italian Language

Let’s take a break from all the Italian Christmas stereotypes, il presepe, il panettone, Babbo Natale, la Befana, and spice things up a bit. I found an interesting little article in the newspaper Corriere della Sera which I thought you might enjoy. But first, click on the photo below to watch a video entitled: L’albero delle polemiche, cosa ne pensano i Milanesi (The controversial tree, what do the people of Milan think about it.)

So … here’s the full article with my English translation:

A lovely tree from a nursery, four meters high, festoons, lights and … sex toys. The most recent of the Christmas trees to have sprung up in Milan brings with it a controversial sexual undertone. "An elegant  decoration that breaks the taboos" says the company who were granted the ground space. "An inopportune gesture", says the council, who changed their minds and revoked their authorisation. We’re in the centre of Milan, in via Como, a redeveloped pedestrianized street, synonymous with fashionable discos and chic courtyards, renowned as a night time haunt for dealers, inheritance of the recent past. "Bad taste" and "desecrating provocation", according to some local inhabitants, and "amusing idea" for other passers by, who praise its aesthetics which they find "anything but obscene".

The project has been developed by the e-commerce company My Secret Case. "This tree with our designer sex toys" defends Norma Rossi, 29, one of the three partners of the brand "is far less vulgar and voyeuristic than lingerie adverts and ‘dancers’ on TV. We’re not provocateurs, we presented a regular request which lasts until until the 27th of December and paid thousands of Euros".

At Palazzo Marino (the council headquarters), they got wind of their gaffe in the afternoon, when controls (of the street decorations) began. "Inopportune objects" affirmed the commissioner of commerce, Franco D’Alfonso, already a main player in the controversy about ice-cream after midnight (what!!!). "Evident irregularity" affirmed his colleague Marco Granelli from the catholic sector, who is in charge of health and safety. In any case, sexy shops, like betting shops, are excluded as tenders from the award of public space. That "Tree of Sin" – that for now is still there – will be removed.

If you’ve watched and understood the video you’ll have noticed that none of the passers-by were offended by the ‘sexy’ tree, and most either found it amusing or didn’t even understand what it’s about. My personal opinion: The council are a bunch of prudish hypocrites, I mean come on, we’ve had a prime minister for around 20 years, who was famous for his Bunga Bunga sex parties and having sex with underage prostitutes, we’ve had a transsexual MP, and an ex-porno star MP, and yet they manage to get offended by a few tastefully displayed designer sex toys, really?

What do you think?
