Hai voglia d’imparare l’italiano?

The sentence above illustrates a very common Italian phrase: ‘avere voglia di fare qualcosa’. This can be translated as:

to feel like doing something
to fancy doing something
to want to do something

Let’s have a look at a few everyday examples:

non ho voglia di andare al lavoro stamattina! = I don’t feel like going to work this morning!
hai voglia di fare un giro in bici? = do you fancy going for a bike ride?
Giovanni mi ha detto che non ha voglia di venire a Parma domani = Giovanni told me he doesn’t feel like coming to Parma tomorrow

When we reinforce voglia with proprio (really), davverro (really), gran (great, short for grande) then it takes on the meaning of:

desire
longing
craving

some examples:

in questo momento ho proprio voglia di farmi una bella doccia fresca = right now I long for a nice cool shower
Lucia ha una gran voglia per la cioccolata = Lucia has a craving for chocolate
abbiamo sempre avuto una gran voglia di andare in Sicilia = we’ve always had a desire to go to Sicily
hai davvero voglia di andare a trovare Marco, vero? = you’re really dying to go and see Marco, aren’t you?

When we feel the need or urge to do something we use the expression mi viene voglia:

vedendo le tue foto mi viene voglia di visitare le Marche = seeing your photos I feel the urge to visit le Marche
è così triste che mi viene voglia di piangere = it’s so sad that I feel like crying

When we loose the will to do something we use the expression passare la voglia or perdere la voglia:

sono proprio stufo di questa faccenda, mi è passata la voglia di fare ancora parte del gruppo = I’m really fed up with this affair, I’ve lost the will to be part of the group any more
questa faccenda mi ha fatto passare la voglia di fare ancora parte del gruppo = this affair has made me loose the will to be part of the group any more
hai perso la voglia di finire il lavoro? = have you lost the will to finish the job?
mi è passata la voglia di studiare = I don’t have the will to study any more

Ho voglia di coccole! I need cuddles!

Finally, a couple of idiosyncratic uses of voglia:

a voglia! = you bet, for sure! ti piace il gelato? … a voglia! = do you like ice cream? … you bet!

la voglia = the birthmark. Popular mythology says that a birthmark is a sign that the child’s mother had a craving (una voglia) that went unsatisfied during her pregnancy. Hence, the birthmark is known as la voglia.
