Here, as promised are the answers to last week’s quiz about ‘ne’, with a few explanatory notes.

Ne used as a substitute for ‘of it’ or ‘of them’, in order to avoid repetition when talking about the quantity of something which has already been mentioned in the conversation.

1. Quante banane vuoi? (Give me six please) … Dammene sei per favore N.B. here, we combine da’, mi and ne to make dammene (give me of them)

2. Quanti gatti ha la Dina? (She’s got four) … Ne ha quattro

3. Quante persone c’erano alla festa? (There where a lot!) …  Ce n’erano tante N.B. ci (there) becomes ce, and we drop the e from ne when it’s followed by erano to make n’erano

4. Ci sono degli spazi liberi nel parcheggio? (Yes, there are  still two or three)…  Sì, ce ne sono ancora due o tre

5. Ci sono rimaste delle uova? (Yes, there are two left) … Sì ce ne sono rimaste due

6. Ci sono abbastanza mele per fare la torta? (No, I’ll need some more) … No, ne avrò bisogno di altre/un po’ di più

7. Quanti anni avevi quando  sei andata in Inghilterra per la prima volta? (I was six) … ne avevo sei N.B. literally ‘I had six of them (years)’

8. Ti piacciono queste camicie? (Yes, if I had enough money I’d buy two of them) … Sì, se avessi abbastanza soldi ne comprerei due N.B. Here we use the standard construction of subjunctive followed by conditional: se avessi (‘if I had’, subjunctive) ne comprerei  (I would buy of them’, conditional)

Ne as a substitute for ‘of it’/ ‘of them’ or ‘about it’/ ‘about them’, with verbs that are normally followed by the preposition ‘di’.

1. using avere bisogno di:  Hai bisogno della matita? (No, I don’t need it) … No, non ne ho bisogno

2. using dimenticarsi di: Ti sei ricordato di telefonare a Mario? (No, I forgot about it) … No, me ne sono dimenticato/a

3. using accorgersi di: Hai visto che c’era anche Mattia alla festa? (No, I wasn’t aware of it) … No, non me n’ero accorto/a N.B. Here once again we drop the e from ne an add an apostrophe to make n’ero (of it I was).

4. using parlare di: Come è andata ieri sera? (Let’s not even talk about it!) … Non ne parliamo neanche!

5. using stancarsi di or stufarsi di: Hai ascoltato tutto il CD che ti ho prestato? (No, I got fed up with it after three tracks) … No, me ne sono stufato/a dopo tre brani

6. using pentirsi di: È stata una giornata un po’ stressante, vero? (Yes, but I don’t regret it) … Sì, ma non me ne pento

7. using interessarsi di or occuparsi di: Chi si interessa della prenotazione del ristorante? (Giorgio is taking care of it) … Se ne sta occupando/interessando Giorgo

8. using innamorarsi di: Pensi che Mario sia innamorato di Lucia? (Yes, he fell in love with her straight away) … Sì, se n’è innamorato subito N.B. si (third person singular reflexive pronoun) becomes se, ne looses the e and becomes n followed by an apostrophe and  è (is): n’è
