The characters: Serena (the client), and l’orologiaio (the watchmaker)

Serena: “Buongiorno, ho bisogno di cambiare la batteria dell’orologio”
Serena: “Good morning, I need to change the battery in my watch”

Orologiaio: “Mi dia pure l’orologio che guardiamo il tipo di batteria”
Watchmaker: “Could you give me the watch so that we can check the battery type”

Serena: “Ecco a lei!”
Serena: “Here you are!”

Orologiaio: “Allora, mettiamo una nuova batteria … mmmh, i contatti sono un po’ ossidati, bisogna darci una pulitina con dell’alcol … (pulisce i contatti) ecco, è ripartito. Se si blocca di nuovo, me lo riporta che lo metto a bagno nell’alcol per tutta una notte”
Watchmaker: “Ok, let’s put a new battery in … mmmh, the contacts are a bit oxidized, they need cleaning with some alcohol … (cleans the contacts) there, it’s going. If it stops again, bring it back to me and I’ll soak it in alcohol for a whole night”

Serena: “Grazie … già che ci siamo, ci sarebbe da cambiare anche il cinturino, che ormai sta cadendo a pezzi”
Serena: “Thank you … while we’re at it, the strap needs changing as well because it’s falling apart”

Orologiaio: “Per questa marca di orologio mi sono rimasti pochi cinturini. Vediamo … ci sono solo questi tre colori: rosso, verde e giallo”
Watchmaker: “I’ve only got a few straps left for this brand of watch. Let’s see … there are only these three colours: red, green, and yellow”

Serena, adocchiando i cinturini dall’aspetto costoso: “Quello rosso andrebbe bene … ma … quanto viene?”
Serena, glancing at the expensive looking straps: “The red one would be fine … but … how much is it?”

Orologiaio: “Viene 20 euro, ma visto che sono gli ultimi glielo metto a 15, va bene?”
Watchmaker: “It’s 20 euros, but since these are the last ones, I’ll make it 15 for you, is that alright?”

Serena, tirando un sospiro di sollievo: “Benissimo! La prossima volta cambierò anche il vetro, che è tutto graffiato”
Serena: breathing with relief: “Great! Next time I’ll also have the glass changed because it’s all scratched”

Orologiaio: “Io non posso cambiare il vetro di questo orologio. Per questa marca bisogna rimandarli in Svizzera alla fabbrica, che costa da morire. Però potrei pulirlo. Posso togliere uno strato superficiale di una frazione di millimetro e così si eliminano tutti i graffi, a meno che non ce ne sia qualcuno particolarmente profondo”
Watchmaker: “I can’t change the glass on this watch. This brand has to be sent back to the factory in Switzerland, which is horrendously expensive. However, I could clean it. I can remove a surface layer of about a fraction of a millimetre, and get rid of all the scratches, unless there are any particularly deep ones”

Serena, incredula: “Davvero?! Ma questo è un cronometro, ha tre bolle di ingrandimento sul vetro!”
Serena, incredulous: “Really?! But this is a stopwatch, it’s got three magnifying bubbles on the glass!”

Orologiaio, sorridendo tutto orgoglioso: “Non si preoccupi, è la mia specialità. Per 20 euro le metto il cinturino nuovo e le pulisco il vetro”
Watchmaker, smiling proudly: “Don’t worry, it’s my speciality. For 20 euros I’ll put on a new strap and polish the glass”

Serena, tutta contenta: “Affare fatto! Per quando sarà pronto?”
Serena, very happy: “It’s a deal! When will it be ready?”

Orologiaio: “Torni per l’inizio della settimana prossima. Vedrà che sarà soddisfatta”
Watchmaker: “Come back at the beginning of next week. I’m sure you’ll be satisfied”

Serena: “Grazie mille e arrivederci alla settimana prossima”
Serena: “Thank you very much … see you next week”
