How would you describe someone’s character? Vocabulary lists are useful, but in everyday conversation you need to be able to come up with the appropriate vocabulary on the fly.

Here’s an exercise that puts you in that situation. You’re chatting with an Italian friend (in Italian obviously!) who’s asking you about other people. See if you can fill in the missing adjectives in the Italian sentences below. I suggest that you refer to my two recent articles: Describing People’s Character In Italian – Part 1. and  Describing People’s Character In Italian – Part 2.

friend: What do you think of Claudio, he seems a very uncommunicative type, and perhaps a bit sad?
amico/a: Cosa pensi di Claudio, mi sembra un tipo _____, e magari un po’ _____?
you: When you don’t know him, yes it’s true, but he’s actually very funny. He comes out with some great jokes!
tu: Quando non lo conosci sì, è vero, però, in realtà è molto _____. Fa certe battute!

friend: Do you know Annalisa? I’ve heard that she’s a likeable person, but a bit indecisive.
amico/a: Conosci Annalisa? Mi hanno detto che è una persona _____, ma un po’ _____
you: Annalisa, yes she’s likeable. But she’s quite shy, perhaps that’s why she can seem indecisive.
tu: Annalisa, sì è _____. Però è abbastanza _____, magari è per quello che può sembrare _____

friend: I need to get my car looked at, do you know a trustworthy mechanic, what about that guy near the railway for example?
amico/a: Devo far controllare la macchina, conosci un meccanico _____, com’è quel tizio vicino alla ferrovia per esempio?
you: Forget that idiot near the railway, he’s not at all professional. I’ll give you the number of my trusted mechanic, he’s very good.
tu: Lascia perdere quell’ _____ vicino alla ferrovia, non è _____ per niente. Ti do il numero del mio meccanico di fiducia, è molto _____.

friend: That girl at the bar seems really vain doesn’t she, she’s always arranging her hair and checking herself in the mirror.
amico/a: Quella ragazza al banco sembra molto _____, vero? E’ sempre a sistemarsi i capelli e a controllarsi allo specchio.
you: That’s true, yes, but I’ve heard that she’s actually very sensitive and lacks self esteem. Her boyfriend is really rude and selfish, I feel sorry for her.
tu: Sì, è vero, ma mi hanno detto che è, infatti, molto _____ e soffre di una mancanza di autostima. Il suo fidanzato è molto _____ e _____. Mi fa pena.

friend: What’s your opinion of the ones who’ve organised these cultural event in the old town centre, are they clever?
amico/a: Qual è la tua opinione di quelli che organizzano questi eventi culturali nel centro storico, sono _____?
you: They’re really clever! There are three of them: Daniela is really likeable, radiant, and full of energy, Simona is very decisive and tidy, and Mattia, who seems quite shy, is a really tough lad but he’s also understanding!
tu: Sono molto _____! Sono in tre: Daniela è molto _____, _____, e piena di energia, Simona è molto _____ e _____, and Mattia, che sembra piuttosto _____, è un ragazzo molto _____, ma anche _____!
