La Festa della Donna – International Women’s Day

“Le donne sostengono la metà del cielo” (Proverbio cinese) “Women hold up half of the sky” (Chinese proverb)

March 8 is International Women’s Rights Day or more commonly, Women’s Day. This celebration has been held in Italy since 1922, but became more popular after the Second World War. With the end of the war, March 8, 1946 was celebrated throughout Italy and saw the first appearance of its symbol, the mimosa, which blooms between February and March.

Women throughout Italy will surely be gifted mimosas, and they may also be treated to dinner by the men in their life. Some women will have a ‘girls night out’ and restaurants/bars will cater to them with special events or deals. As such, it has become a bit of a commercialized holiday not unlike Valentine’s Day. There is even a “torta mimosa” sold for this holiday that is decorated to resemble the beautiful and fragrant yellow mimosas!

The feminist roots of the holiday, however, are quite serious as it is meant to celebrate the social, political, and economic achievements of women all around the world. Protests have been often staged specifically around this time of year in search of the expansion of women’s rights.

Today, Women’s Day has lost its value a bit. However, there are women’s organizations that continue to try to raise public awareness of various kinds of problems affecting women – such as violence against women and the wage gap compared to men.
