La Sicilia Posted by on Sep 25, 2019 in Culture, Italian Language

La Sicilia. Che dire della Sicilia?

Sicily. What is there to say about Sicily?

It is the region that I feel closest to, because my blood is also Sicilian.

My relatives come from this region, savage, generous, architecturally beautiful.

The cities that I have visited are Palermo, Catania, Agrigento, and Caltanisetta (twin city with my hometown of Rochester).

The idea that an American has when thinking about Sicily is generally from the film “The Godfather”, but this is more often than not an untrue stereotype.

Sicilians are… sunny, warm, like their delicious lemons.

You cannot really say to have tried the flavor of a real lemon, or of an orange, if you have not at least tried once in your life this type of Sicilian fruit.

Eh mamma mia!

And oh my goodness! Sicilian food is the best in Italy! Meat (in Catania, horse is very good), fish, cous-cous, first courses, how much I love pasta alla norma and then the desserts… the famous Sicilian cannoli and the cassata are absolutely incredible.

Ma non c’è solo il cibo…

But there is not just food…

Sicily is also the ideal destination for those who want to vacation at the beach (and patience if your bathing suit is a bit tight seeing as you will have exaggerated with the food…)

Questa è la vera Sicilia! Andateci e godetevela!!!

This is the real Sicily! Go there and enjoy it!

And you, have you ever eaten a real Sicilian cannoli?

    Grazie Mille, Bridgette!
How timely is this blog, for we are honored to visit Sicilia this November for 3.5 weeks. I will try all you have suggested! I have also retained the tour service of Giuseppe Marchese who was born and raised in Sicilia and comes highly recommended. I am grateful for your blogs that prove to be fun, interesting, insightful and keep me incredibly interested in the language of Italia!

  5. William Auge:

Si, ho mangiato un vero cannolo siciliano. Even though it has been 14 years since I savored that moment I remember well walking into a busy shop in Catania, purchasing my cannolo and then walking out into the night onto Via Etna and biting into my fabulous treat through the crunch of the shell and into the soft sweet filling with the candied orange inside. The white powered sugar dusted the front of my black jacket but I could only smile with pleasure.
I too fell for pasta alla norma. I enjoyed it so much that when I returned to Chicago I worked on replicating it the best I could. It is now one of my wife’s favorite dishes. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
    a dopo, William

    Ciao Brigette,
A belated query.. La parola ‘svelaggia’: should it be translated ‘wild’ ? I don’t know what it is describing?
