Yesterday evening we arrived home in Italy after a three day drive across Europe from England. Now, there’s only one thing I can think of: Sleep. Well dear readers, let’s see if I can stop yawning long enough to write you a sleepy little blog. Guess what it’s going to be about …

Some Sleepy Vocabulary:

sbadigliare = to yawn

non riesco a smettere di sbadigliare = I can’t stop yawning

sonno = sleep

avere sonno = to be tired/sleepy

che sonno che ho! = I’m so tired/sleepy!

Geoff è andato a letto presto perché aveva un sonno da morire = Geoff went to bed early because he was/felt very tired/sleepy

mi è venuto un gran sonno, vado a sdraiarmi un po’ = I feel really tired, I’m going to go to lie down for a while

sonnecchiare = to doze

credo di aver sonnecchiato un po’ = I think I dozed for a bit

sonnolenza = drowsiness

attenzione, questa medicina può causare sonnolenza = warning, this medicine can cause drowsiness

dormire = to sleep

ho dormito come un sasso = I slept like a log (lit. like a stone)

c’è troppo rumore, non riesco a dormire= It’s too noisy, I can’t sleep

dormita = sleep, rest

mi sono fatta proprio una bella dormita = I had a really good sleep

dormiglione = sleepyhead

Paolo è proprio un dormiglione, non si alza mai in tempo! = Paolo is a real sleepyhead, he never gets up in time!

addormentarsi = to fall asleep

ogni volta che mi addormentavo un rumore forte mi svegliava = every time I fell asleep a load noise woke me up

ero così stanca che mi sono addormentata di colpo = I was so tired that I fell asleep immediately

dormiveglia = to be half awake

ero così nervosa all’idea del viaggio che sono rimasta tutta la notte in uno stato di dormiveglia = I was so nervous at the thought of the journey that I lay half awake all night

dormitorio = dormitory

su questo piano c’è il dormitorio maschile e di sopra quello femminile = The male dormitory is on this floor is and the female one is upstairs

chiudere occhio = to sleep

non ho chiuso occhio tutta la notte = I didn’t sleep the whole night

pennichella = nap

molto spesso dopo pranzo io e Geoff facciamo una pennichella = Geoff and I often take a nap after lunch

pisolino = nap

vado a fare un pisolino e poi mi metto a lavorare = I’m going for a nap and then I’ll start working

we also have the strange expression schiacciare un pisolino (lit. to squash a nap)
