The Empty Headed Italian Blogger! Posted by on Nov 16, 2015 in Uncategorized

Cari lettori, stamattina ho la testa proprio vuota, mi pare di non riuscire a scrivervi una bella introduzione … quindi, incominciamo subito con il vocabolario di oggi: vuoto e pieno
Dear reader, my head is really empty this morning, I can’t seem to manage to write you a nice introduction … so let’s get straight on with today’s vocabulary: empty and full

vuoto/i/a/e, adjective = empty

this changes depending on number and gender of the noun it refers to. Here are a few examples:

1. vuota, feminine singular – la stanza era vuota = the room was empty
2. vuote, feminine plural tutte queste case sono ormai vuote = all these houses are empty now
3. vuoto, masculine singular – oggi il treno era vuoto = the train was empty today
4. vuoti, masculine plural – quei vasi sono vuoti = those flower pots are empty

svuotare, verb = to empty

hai svuotato le tasche dei tuoi pantaloni? = have you emptied your trouser pockets?
dai, svuotiamo la macchina, è piena di spazzatura = come on, let’s empty the car, it’s full of rubbish
voglio svuotare la camera da letto e pitturarla = I want to empty the bedroom and repaint it

N.B. svuotare is more commonly used than the verb vuotare.

pieno/i/a/e, adjective = full

as with vuoto, this changes depending on number and gender of the noun it refers to. Here are a few examples:

1. piena, feminine singular – la mia tazza è già piena = my cup is already full
2. piene, feminine pluraltutte le macchine erano piene di persone = all the cars were full of people
3. pieno, masculine singular – il serbatoio è pieno = the tank/reservoir is full
4. pieni, masculine plural  i miei pantaloni sono pieni di buchi = my trousers are full of holes

riempire, verb = to fill

fumo001-002

mi puoi riempire questa bottiglia di aqua? = can you fill this bottle with water for me?
abbiamo riempito tre ceste di ciliege = we filled three baskets with cherries
siccome oggi fa molto caldo riempio la piscina per i bimbi = as it’s really hot today I’m going to fill the paddling pool (children’s swimming pool)

more words and expressions based on vuoto and pieno

il pieno = full petrol/gas tank: “mi fa il pieno per favore?” = “fill her up please”
fiume in piena = swollen river : il fiume in piena faceva paura = the swollen river was frightening
strapieno/i/a/e = overfull: lo stadio era strapieno di gente = the stadium was overfull (overflowing) with people
sottovuoto = vacuum: vendono la pasta fresca sottovuoto? = do they sell fresh vacuum packed pasta?

You may not have been inspired to write a nice introduction but the illustrations were pretty good! Grazie!

  2. MADELINE PARELLA:

    thank you

  3. Lesley:

    Molto utile, grazie

  4. Phil:

One minor correction on “siccome oggi fa molto caldo riempio la piscina per i bimbi.” In American English, we would call it a “kiddie pool or wading pool.”
